Pentagon puts military police on alert as protests over George Floyd’s death continue across US | South China Morning Post

The get-ready orders were sent verbally after US President Donald Trump asked for military options to help quell the unrest in Minneapolis

Anger over the police killing of George Floyd continues to spread, with one person killed in Detroit and protests outside the White House

As unrest spread across dozens of American cities on Friday, the Pentagon took the rare step of ordering the Army to put several active-duty US military police units on the ready to deploy to Minneapolis, where the police killing of George Floyd sparked the widespread protests.

Soldiers from Fort Bragg in North Carolina and Fort Drum in New York have been ordered to be ready to deploy within four hours if called, according to three people with direct knowledge of the orders. Soldiers in Fort Carson, in Colorado, and Fort Riley in Kansas have been told to be ready within 24 hours.

The get-ready orders were sent verbally after US President Donald Trump asked Defence Secretary Mark Esper for military options to help quell the unrest in Minneapolis after protests descended into looting and arson in some parts of the city.

I think pent up tensions over the pandemic & unemployment are at play here but military action likely won't solve either problem. The racism in Minneapolis was only that catalyst that got it started.

The assumption that racism was the motive for the use of excessive force by the Minneapolis police officer(s?) involved has not even been formally alleged, much less proven in court. The homicide (third degree murder and manslaughter) charge(s) brought forth (so far) don't even include criminal intent (an element necessary for a first or second degree murder charge), yet many are simply assuming that a (race based?) "hate crime" must have occurred.

Trump doesn't want to help states unless he thinks doing so:

1. Will help keep him from looking bad politically

2. Will help him get re-elected

3. Will, as authoritarian, increase his personal power

4. Will give Republicans more Big Government they love (while claiming they hate it)

5. Will calm his nerves because he ****ing panics and often shoots from the hip

Sending in federal troops won't solve centuries of racism and oppression. It will make it much worse. If Trump wants to show America he loves people of color and is committed to ending racism and bigotry in America he would start by firing Stephen Miller and Betsy DeVos. Nope. Instead, he tells Esper to mobilize military police.

Given the situation prevailing in the US today is it really an unwarranted assumption? It's not like there hasn't been case after case of dying while black at police hands in the last few years.
