"It’s getting late early for John Cornyn. Yet another poll shows the four-term incumbent lagging well behind his hard-right challenger, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, in next year’s primary. The poll, conducted on behalf of a Paxton-allied super PAC, shows the Texas attorney general with a commanding 19-point lead over the incumbent — 57 to 38 percent — in a head-to-head matchup of Texas Republican primary voters. It’s the latest data point for national Republicans who see Cornyn flailing with primary voters but worry about the general election prospects for Paxton, who has faced both indictment and impeachment.

The race has increasingly become a topic of worry in Republican circles as operatives dread the prospect of an ugly, expensive primary that could potentially provide an opening for Democrats in the Lone Star State.
Perhaps most remarkable, the poll shows Paxton with higher name ID than Cornyn, who has long been a national figure on Capitol Hill. Eighty-nine percent of primary voters have an opinion of Paxton and 84 percent of Cornyn. Both are viewed positively by the electorate, but Paxton is far more well-liked. His net favorable-unfavorable ratio is 70 to 18 percent, while Cornyn’s is 53 to 30 percent.

“This first report shows what the armchair pundits fail to realize — this race is only beginning in earnest,” Aaron Whitehead, the executive director of the outside pro-Cornyn group, told POLITICO. “With eight months to go before the March primary, Texans for a Conservative Majority is well positioned to take the fight to Ken Paxton and independently support Senator John Cornyn’s re-election.”

Texas’ primary will be held on March 3, 2026."

Paxton's such a gangster, but so's the prez, so anything's possible.

I hope the two Repubs wear each other out and a Democrat takes the seat.

It is shameful for Texans that a crook like Paxton is ahead of any other opponent.
Texans have always had questionable judgement, starting with why would any sane want to live in the state in the first place? It is not a particularly attractive place; hot as hell; and constantly besieged with violent weather. I still hope they secede.

I still hope they secede.

They already seceded twice. As Coahuila y Tejas from the Estados Unidos Mexicanos, then as Texas from the United States of America. If they secede one more time it will be a third. Maybe three is a charm

I think a Paxton win might just put the seat in play for Dems.

Is this the new mantra for the Republican party? A successful candidate needs to have indictments and impeachments to be popular?

What a crock the crooks then claim to be the party of law and order.
