TLDR; Patriotism is essentially a religion. It has holy texts, mythic patriarchs, holy days, rites of passage, rites of observance, myths, parables, hymns, icons and symbols. But of course a lot of things have that, most sports teams have many of those things, but what goes on and takes Patriotism the extra step towards religion is that is acts as a presumptive ideology. It is presumed that your nation is the greatest, your people are the greatest, your culture is the greatest, and most other conflicting or competing considerations come second to those presumptions, and failing to display the proper version of Patriotism for your cultural and community can instantly mark you as an outsider and lower your social cachet.

Only a leftist would believe such an absurd notion. Worshipping government, as leftist loons are wont to do, is the religion of the state, lol, literally.

If you want to know what a lib is up to, pay attention to what they accuse other's of. ;)

I think your point is that the left's respect for big government is like religion. But that's no different than a conservative's respect for small government, or the free-market, etc. All of these things are ideologies.

I think nationalism/patriotism is like religion (i.e. worship) of the state. But like religion, there are healthy and unhealthy versions. You can't equate basic patriotism, in the sense of being proud of your country, with reasons to support that pride, with some religious zealot who will die for a God because a thousand year old book tells him to.

I'm not concerned with my social cachet. I've also noticed over time that the people who talk most often about the qualities of patriotism generally have nothing at all invested in it.

Religion or not, once we were the city on the hill. When I was in college, I was introduced to the French singer/songwriter, Jacques Brel. There was one song, Madeline. It was about a boy who was waiting for a girl who always said she'd meet him but never did, but he always hoped. He did this every week and never wised up. He said in the refrain that she was his America! This was in the 70's when France was supposed to hate us. Trump wants to drag us down. He wants us to be the same self interested, short sighted, mean, petty people who are just like him.

You can think whatever you like, you are wrong. You are merely projecting, like all libs do.

Would you care to elaborate on which points you disagree with, and why?

Patriotism is the belief in ideals and values underpinning a nation. A US or Western World patriot is the same thing - a respect for the understandings of The Enlightenment - socially natural rights, democracy and equality before the law. These values are not beholden to any nation or country, they are merely adopted by some.

I think the OP meant nationalism, a horrid ideology of small minds and cowards.
