Well form Canada Steven Truscott worngly sentenced to death in 1959 and Guy Paul Morin would have faced death penalty if it wasn't abolished. Wikipedia has a nice list of exonerated death row prisoners here.

You can release someone form prison if they are still alive and serving a life sentence but not if they are dead.
