Crazy how the 49ers went from #1 seed to #5 after just one week.

49ers-Saints game this Sunday is going to be huge.

2 losses in 4 weeks will do that.

The Panthers just fired the greatest coach in their teams history. A lot of teams will probably call Ron Rivera about a head coaching job.

Payback. :lamo

The gods returned the favor for the BS defensive penalty late in Pats vs. Raiders 1976 playoff game. ;)

I was watching that game just before I left for boot camp.
Perhaps, I was 4 when that game took place, lol.

Thanks for your service!!!

Bears?

who is both available and better ... someone the panthers could replace him with?
if unable to answer that question, then it would be foolish to part with cam

ditto for the coach/rivera
Available? Better? Both debatable. RR I couldn't care less about.

I don't understand all the praise for Rivera. Sure, he was the greatest coach in their team's history... because the others sucked even more - remember John Fox? As a Panthers fan, I was sick and tired of the team's mediocrity under Rivera, and his conservative play-calling. Yes, he would make a good defensive coordinator, his strongest suit. But as a head coach I thought that he wasn't that good. Sure, they lost their franchise quarterback so it is hard to do well in these circumstances, but I actually partially blame Ron for it. Cam Newton posted a passionate goodbye thanking Ron for "letting me be me." Yep, he sure did that. The problem is that allowing Cam to be himself shortened Cam's career. All that bold running, even going head first instead of sliding down with feet first, all the immature posturing that even refs got turned off to, contributed to Cam getting hit so many times that his body suffered and he is now injury prone.

I thought that Rivera should have reined him in and protected his young and immature quarterback a lot better, saying, "young man, if you don't cut the crap I'll bench you, and that will be in the best interest of your career because if you keep doing what you are doing, your career will be short." No, I remember Ron's interviews, when journalists questioned him about it, and he just shrugged and said, "Oh, Cam is just being Cam." Yeah, he was. But it was on you, Ron, the much older and supposedly wise guy, to be a role model for Cam and to guide him in ways that would have preserved his body a bit better.

I am a member of a Panthers fan blog and I'll tell you, everybody there is relieved that Ron is finally gone. The only problem is that the whole bunch should be fired too... The offensive coordinator sucks even more than Ron, and the front desk sucks too, being unable for example to draft or sign good safeties, and a good enough backup quarterback (Kyle Allen is not that, despite earlier success until the league figured him out).

gotta call bull**** on the post above
cam was a phenom when he first arrived at the NFL
a qb who could bring the option play to the major league
and then the coaches decided he needed to become a pocket passer
they did not draft him as a pocket passer, they selected him as a huge qb with a respectable arm and the motor of a halfback; someone who could somersault into the end zone
then management decided to try to make cam into something he would never be good at - a pocket passer. a pocket passer with a consistently inferior offensive line to "protect" him

as an aside, the best coach on the team left sunday's game with a concussion

It's not bull....
It's a complex issue.
The bottom line is that both my position and your position end up portraying Cam as the victim of an unfair system. And a victim he is; a talented young man who know has a broken body.
Look at what happened to Andrew Luck, another example.

Ron Rivera had his flaws but he wasn't the only problem with the Panthers. Their drafting in the past few years has been suspect; everyone praises CMC but forgets how empty the Panthers offense was before hand. It was just Cam and Greg Olson. Rivera was a decent coach, good defensive mind, knew to build his game plans around his players. But his time management and his inability to know when to take risks ultimately outweighed his success.

White coaches are always given the benefit of the doubt. They are given "lifetime" contracts and second/third/fourth/fifth chances. It is ridiculous.

Meanwhile, black and Hispanic coaches are given a very short leash and need to wait several years before getting their opportunity. Ron Rivera deserved to coach the Super Chargers but they gave the job to a mediocre coach in Norv Turner.

Ron Rivera did not get a fair shake.

I couldn't care less if Ron Rivera is Hispanic, black, white, yellow, or green. I don't have a single racist fiber in my body. As a Panthers fan, I care for the fact that Ron Rivera is a mediocre coach who lead an otherwise fairly talented roster of players into an era of mediocrity. He is often outcoached by opponents. At half time, and unlike what happens for teams coached by more talented head coaches, the Panthers rarely adapt to what is being thrown at them by the other team. Sure, Ron is a nice guy. Sure, I respect his Veteran status in our armed forces. Sure, I respect the fact that as a minority coach he had to face bigger hurdles. Sure, I'm glad for him that with all the head winds, he scored some good contracts and made a lot of money. But no, I don't want him as the head coach of my team, because I think he is mediocre.

Exactly. I did say the owner should fire the whole bunch including the front office. And yes, I did say that Ron would be a good defensive coordinator. But no, not a good head coach, because the shortcomings you've just mentioned make of the full picture, a mediocre one.

About CMC, I pity the guy. He is quality. He is MVP caliber. He is one of the best players that this league has ever had. I imagine CMC going to church on Sunday morning and praying, "God, what did I do to deserve this? What kind of sin or karma have I committed, to deserve that in your infinite wisdom, you made my talents be wasted in a mediocre team like the Carolina Panthers????"

I don’t believe Rivera was a veteran himself. If my recollection is correct his father was a lifer in the army

You are right about that. I was mistaken. It was Rivera's father who was an officer in the US Army.

Hey Dallas...are you still Dem boys?

WTF happened to that team....and in fact that whole division.

Bears all I want to know is where the hell this was all year

lol...beating the Lions and Cowboys does not a SB team make.

Who said anything about a super bowl? Fact of the matter is that if they’d played like this all year they’d have at least another three wins.

If I heard this right during last night's game..

The Cowboys have the 8th best defense in the NFL, AND the 1st rated offense? 1st in offense and top 10 in defense, AND in the worse division in the NFL, but they are 6-7?

WTF? Besides the easy answer of 'it's Garrett', how is that possible?

Their stats are based on facing ****ty teams and counting stuff like "yardage" as good metric of the #1 offense.
