New favorite candidate: Pete Buttigieg

For the last two years my favorite candidates have been Elizabeth Warren for her vast policy resumé, Kamala Harris for her steely focus and energy, and Beto O'Rourke for his ability to energize a crowd. All of these are incredibly important traits, but I think what they lack is a philosopher's soul. For that I give you: Pete Buttigieg.

I saw his on Morning Joe and was impressed. They were firing questions at him and he gave knowledgeable answers; didn’t falter once. I am having a hard time with the “old white guy” and I am an old white woman, but for now I like Buttigieg.

His CNN town hall and his appearance on "Morning Joe" yesterday were amazing. He is incredible. A veteran, Rhodes scholar and speaks many languages.

I saw his Morning Joe segment too and was SO impressed. I can't wait for the next time he comes to NH. I'm going to see him. I think he's amazing.

Yes he is. Likely going to get my vote. Unless of course someone viable runs against Trump, then I might vote for them instead.

That's great that he's inspiring, but he doesn't pass the initial hurdle of qualifications for me. He doesn't have significant, large scale, executive experience, and has no experience at the federal level. (And barely tipping the constitutional age requirement at 37, not a lot of life experience either). He has been mayor of South Bend for six years, but being mayor of a small-medium (100K population - 301st largest city in US) quiet city doesn't prepare someone to be president.

And I can see no reason why he would. He's a liberal and you're a conservative.

If the GOP doesn't primary Trump I'm going to have to switch my party declaration before the midterm. If they primary Trump, I'll see who it is and consider than person first.

I am going to consider Buttigieg very carefully no matter what.

I agree. I think I would vote for him.

That said, he has no chance in the USA at this time because he's gay. That's horrible, but true.

But being a reality TV game show host absolutely prepares one for the Presidency.

And a Trump supporter doesn't see him passing the "initial hurdle of qualifications". What a surprise. He should probably consider talking about how Mexico is sending us rapists and how much he likes to walk up to strange women and grab their genitals.

I feel like people won't consider him as an option, simply because of his last name.

Yeah, I'd agree. America still has a pretty long way to go in terms of gay acceptance.

It's really hard to not like the guy. I'm going to have to see how he continues the campaign. But I really like him so far.

That's a very unfortunate truth. A gay person will be rejected until the Evangelicals, freaks, homophobes, and Trump supporters have died out.

Would be hilarious hearing Trump trying to pronounce it.. :2razz: I keep hearing people go on about his age but seriously when was the last time a dem won the WH that was over 60? Truman? FDR? They have all been pretty young. Its fairly recently we have had senior citizens for presidents.

"As evangelicals, we can't vote for the homosexual! We have to vote for the serial adulterer instead!"

He is going to have to counter his age with a very experienced VP. At this point I do wonder who that would be? Klobuchar? Brown?

It has nothing to do with liberal vs. conservative, unless by that you mean that liberals aren't worried about someone meeting basic qualifications for the job. (You did mention O'Rourke as well). I would say the same thing about a conservative with the same background.

He does bring experience (and certainly more than Trump brought, though admittedly that's an awfully low bar).

But even though being mayor (though certainly not inconsequential) is not quite as good as being governor, experience is only one factor. If somebody has demonstrated themselves to be thoughtful enough in the rest of their life and positions, that is going to be an additional determining factor.

lol -- not sure where where to even begin. Whataboutism? How do you define 'Trump supporter' and what would that have to do with it? And for consistency - I've repeatedly said that Trump didn't meet that hurdle for me during his initial run either, and Hillary did.

I did't comment on his policy positions (have no idea what those even are). I'm talking about basic preparedness for that level of job. He would be completely out of his depth.

He brings experience - as any candidate would. However, not relevant experience. Thoughtful life experience doesn't prepare someone to be president. For me he doesn't even get the interview. If you think he does, we can respectfully disagree.

And for the whataboutism (not normal for you) - again, Trump didn't meet the bar for me either. However, his significant large scale experience in the commercial sector would put him ahead of a few years as a smallish city mayor.
