NCAA Tournament 2017

No real surprise today if we see one, maybe two, upsets today among the 5 v 12s.

12:15 pm Notre Dame v. Princeton .... CBS

12:40 pm Virginia v. UNC Wilmington... TRU

3:55 pm Minnesota v. Middle Tennessee... TNT

9:52 pm Iowa State v. Nevada ... TRU

I think this will be one of those odd years with no 5 v 12 upsets

All grins! The past hour I've gone back and forth between the first two games. Notre Dame has kept control of the first game and Virginia came storming back to take a one point lead at half.

I love March Madness!

Princeton damned near screwed a whole bunch of brackets. My only 12 over 5 pick was Nevada and I'll find out about that tonight.

Middle Tennessee, a very good 12 Seed, beat Minnesota, a 5 Seed.... 81 - 72.

Really, this Win did not surprise very many analysts.

Later tonight, we find out if Nevada, another very good 12 Seed, can beat Nevada, a 5 Seed.

Congratulations to Northwestern and all their fans for today's win over Vanderbilt! Now you need to settle down and focus on the 2nd Round.

The Big 10 sucks almost every year. But the committee still ranks Big 10 teams high, in many peoples opinion they rank them too high. So yeah, it really is no surprise Minnesota loss.

I had Minn winning their next game too. Also had Vandy beating N'western buy the Zags have that bracket.

Duke, Villanova, Louisville, Kentucky

Duke Kentucky

DUKE!!!!!!

It's been a pretty fun day of basketball. No real upsets (I don't count Middle Tennessee over Minnesota, especially with Minnesota playing without one of their starting guards), but it's still been a fun day. Xavier seems to be finally playing to its ability, at the wrong time for Maryland.

14 Seed Florida Gulf Coast University (Ft. Meyers) has taken the game to 3 Seed FSU! We Gator fans love to hate Florida State! No matter the 1st half score, I expect FSU to win this game.

Rumors abound about FGCU, including -

1. FGCU took over University of Miami's reputation as Suntan U.
2. Core Curriculum requires learning SPFs for Sun Lotions, learning how to crew on sailboats and yachts, jet ski, water ski, windsurf, para sail and sport fish.
3. Students must wear flipflops or open-toed shoes on Campus.
4. Students must learn to recite and sing at least one Jimmy Buffet song before they can graduate.

Why should they send top teams far away from their homes where few of their fans would travel and where they'd be at a big disadvantage?

I thought the point of the tournament was to establish the top teams?

May as well hold the games on their home court if "top teams" can't travel then while at it. At least some students could make the games then, because they sure as hell don't now. I'm just saying, let's drop the ruse of fairness while prioritizing ticket sales. These are not compatible goals

But in reality even many of the low seeds were kept nearby, presumably just to save a few grand on plane rides. I especially think the 3rd-4th rounds should not have some kind of policy to force nearby teams to face each other (like Zona-Zaga). Or what if Zaga is put in a midwest bracket and the 2 seed is from east coast, so both have to travel? The goal IMO should be rare matchups you don't see during the season

Here's the NCAA principles on seeding.

The discussion wasn't about seeding but where the teams are sent, and that only proves my point - Teams will remain in or as close to their areas of natural interest as possible

There is no attempt to justify this within the context of a national tournament, and it can't be about home field disadvantage when it applies to EVERY team. Not to mention they even move teams up and down 1-2 seeds to keep them nearby. It's strictly about saving $ and selling tickets (making more $). And if a supposed non profit doing all this to eek out $101 million instead of $100 million sacrifices the legitimacy of the tournament, and not to mention variety of competition...well that would be just like the NCAA

USC wins again! I wonder how long that run can last.

Wichita State looked pretty good too for a 10-seed. I think they play KY next.

Peace out Nova.

Well, that's 3 sweet 16 losses for me so far. I had Duke beating Nova in the Elite 8 so it's not a total loss.

Wow! What a finish to the Purdue v. Iowa State game!

8 teams advanced today to the Sweet 16!

Congratulations Wisconsin, Florida, Gonzaga, West Virginia, Xavier, Arizona, Butler and Purdue!

March Madness continues. 8 more teams advance tomorrow.

I have two brackets this year. Picked Arizona as national champion in one and Gonzaga in the other. This afternoon I have Michigan over Louisville and Wichita State over Kentucky.

That Arizona/St Mary's game was 2 hours of cardiac arrest for me last night.

I was working last night and just had score updates to go by. The first half was just plain depressing and they didn't really pull away until 2 min left in the 2nd. I'm not sure what their FT% was last year but it sure seems to be a LOT better this year and it's making all the difference right now.

Gozanga has an incredibly soft underbelly. AZ is going to rape them if Gonzaga even gets past WV.

Kansas looks good. The South is wide open. UCLA is the best team in the bracket but beating Kentucky and UNC in three days in what will basically be home games for them may be too much.

I'd like to see USC win tonight. Baylor certainly can be beat.

I'm certainly no fan of USC but their steel was forged in PAC-12 conference play. I think they can beat Baylor.
