Mom Sends Her ‘Gendered’ Son, 3, to Ballet Class to Make Him More ‘Girlish’

I'm arguing that there's definitely SOMETHING girly about ballet. You said there was NOTHING girly about ballet.
Tights, tutus, delicate, flowing movements -- yeah, nothing girly about that.
Spartans use to exercise naked doing calisthenic, brush their hair before a battle, and definitely had flowing movements. Girly?

I'm curious though, have you seen live professional male dancers? I have seen a number of them in shows over the years (wife requested attendance), and they really didn't come off as girly at all, they were often ripped up guys, showing bare chest often, and the girls...paid plenty of attention to them. Just saying, I know what you mean, but in practice, I didn't really see it.

Some things may be girly about ballet, but ballet is not inherently feminine.

Ever see a flamboyant gay guy that is in great shape? Girly guys can work out, you know.

I never said the men were girly.

Football is more child abuse than ballet. Destroy your kids body before they understand the risks, and the incredible (ultimately) lack of reward for 99.99% of players. A few busted knees, shoulders, and a concussion or two, all just make 'em tougher right? All because you loved Friday Night Lights.
(Neither are actually child abuse but tackle football is far less responsible parenting IMO, if you're forced to rate it)

Nothing wrong with ballet for anyone. Plenty of hardcore men that are incredible dancers, including ballet.

Just so you know, you're around incredible dancing women, in skin tight clothing, holding them all the time, as you basically "work out" round the clock to tone and build strength (Throws, leaps, etc.), and proudly display your bulging crotch to slightly prudish but appreciative audience.

The thing is, ballet is a physical art. Your body look and your technique are on visual display. It's like body building, but looks beautiful rather than like you're constipated, and where you don't need to do steroids 24/7 to compete. On that note, Arnold Schwarzenegger took ballet to help him with bodybuilding, and it also helped him later with acting.

Christian Bale was a dancer early on. His first cool role in Equilibrium where he did the gun/pistol work, according to Bale the scene withe motorcycle helmet beat-down was able to be done in one glorious (for its time) take, in part because of his dance training (remembering numerous physical poses and sequence and executing them in a natural looking manner).

Christopher Walken was a ballet dancer.

Ballet dancers are ripped, can dance, get great cardio, and stay flexible. You could hardly do better for your kid in making them a more attractive to (any sex) man.

Actors are the same guys that get their eye brows done for award shows. These same actors just so happen to be in action movies. I'm not sure hollywood is a great example of anything masculine.

WTF Henrin. Wait, never-mind, it doesn't surprise me, it's unfortunately just your character flaw at work again.
These weren't flamboyant men.
They were not gay.

You do understand that there are many gay men that are not flamboyant, and that right now you do not know are gay, right? If someone is into gay culture and the accent and all that, who cares? It has NOTHING TO DO WITH BALLET/DANCE.

Stop letting gay men scare you aware from things you incorrectly associate with being gay, it's girly behavior to let them scare you off that way.

They're dancing around like little girls, so seems kind of gay to me. Anyways, that wasn't my point. As for the rest of your post, a guy doesn't need to be flamboyant to make it clear to people they are gay.

Any time I see someone irrationally hating, I assume they are either insecure or closet, or both.

Nothing is irrational about what I'm saying and I'm hardly hating. Ballot is girly and listing example of dudes that do it or did it doesn't change that. Hell, saying how you have to be in shape doesn't even change that.

So what does ballet have to do with that?

Seems a fact that the mother in question wishes your son to be more feminine.

Aren't male ballet performers more prone to being more feminine? I thought they were, and I'd wager that a majority of the populace would think so too.

There's nothing girly about ballet. Football players often take ballet because it helps with their footwork.

Back in the day I saw Rosey Grier on the Captain Kangaroo show talking about doing ballet and, if I remember correctly, knitting. It wasn't about being "girlish". It was about trying different things and expanding your world view.

That being said, the idea that a woman would "punish" her son for acting too masculine is beyond disturbing. I guess she just decided to avoid the whole "talk to him and get to know your kid" thing was too much of a drag on her personal time.

The idea of the mother pushing him that way doesn't seem right. And I take issue with her putting him in ballet because it's girly. Putting him in ballet instead of soccer isn't going to make him girly.

If, on the other hand, the kid wanted to take ballet, It was the right move to let him do it.

My issue is that it's somehow "girly" as opposed to soccer. That is just wrong. Men can be ballet dancers, and many of them are quite good at it

one of my college suitemates was the son of a dancer and gymnast and not surprisingly he was a dancer and the Ivy league champion in the rings. He was one well cut dude-at 145 or so he could bench close to 300 pounds. He also had one of the best looking girls in college as his GF.

Jeez people - have you ever heard of getting both sides of the story before you condemn someone?

Apparently not (some of you).

News organizations are known for taking quotes and twisting them to suit their agenda. This article is from 'Heatstreet'?!? Never heard of it.

Maybe this woman is a nut. Or maybe she has been misquoted. Or maybe the truth it is somewhere in between.

But I am not going to condemn her on the basis of one article.

And don't bother trying to debate me on this because I don't care enough about this story to waste any more time on it. I was just bored.

I just wanted to point out how incredibly quick lots of people around here are to judge others.
