It might well be something you or I would consider minor, not meriting stripping the title, but until we've been told what it was there's no justification for calling it a smear.

I think that may play a part in it as you need real life scenarios for someone to be able to connect with the characters and create that empathy for them but I think it largely has to do with the combination of the writing and talent of the actor/actress that really creates that lasting quality. For instance, Sanford and Son without Redd Foxx would not be the hit with lasting appeal without him or even with someone else playing that character. There are just times that the combination of good writing and right talent come together to produce that iconic character like an Al Bundy, Thelma Harper, All 4 of the Golden Girls, Archie and Judith, George Jefferson, Steve Urkel and Carl Winslow etc. I can't think of any character from a sitcom released in the last decade that you could put up with that list and say they would have that same lasting appeal. It could very well be just nostalgia, but considering some of those shows ended before I was even born it would be hard to make that case.
