Microsoft gambles on a quantum leap in computing

Can anyone here imagine what they could do with a quantum computer? I'm not asking how it works but what awesome things could possibly come of it?

How's about a computer rivaling the human brain + self-awareness?

IMO, MS never really was known for innovation, just taking the ideas of others and adapting it for the mass market.

Windows--Apple
Excel--Lotus
Word--Xerox
Powerpoint--Presenter
Edge/Explorer--Netscape
etc etc etc

Windows.

Windows 286 and 386 were theirs. And they should have to do jail time for that

Yes. MS basically is built on successive pirating of other people's ideas & getting away with it.

I am confused! Will this technology be able to answer the question , "what came first, the chicken or the egg?"
"Beyond conventional computers," what does this mean?

The egg.

The Microsoft people walked out of Xerox PARC with the whole GUI interface idea (Windows), mouse & all. Xerox could have been much bigger than Microsoft but their top administrators had little vision of what lay beyond the copy machine, just as Polaroid failed because its leaders couldn't see beyond the instant film concept to digital photography. Isn't the mix of technology & corporations an interesting study?

Do you mean the Apple people? This video is interesting but could be edited to about 2 minutes.

Yes. I sometimes have a hard time keeping my computer technology pirates straight.

And didn't Steve Jobs ultimately steal the Windows idea (bitmapping) from Xerox Parc?

Greetings, JC. :2wave:

I know that Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak co-founded APPLE in 1976, but I'm not certain about a theft. Here is the famous quote in the book written about him, though. It seems that Bill Gates visited Jobs at Apple, and while they were sitting in the Conference Room with several of Jobs' employees, Jobs started shouting at Gates - "I trusted you, and now you're stealing from me!" Gates sat there coolly, and finally answered, "Well Steve, I think there's more than one way of looking at it. I think it's more like we had this rich neighbor named Xerox and I broke into his house to steal his TV set and found out you had already stolen it!"

Did Jobs steal from Xerox? I don't know, or much care, frankly. What I care about is what the people we elected to go to DC are not doing for the money we pay them, and that is both sides working together to get things done! Enough is Enough! :2mad:

Great quote from one of my favorite books Pg! One difference between Jobs and the big wigs at Xerox at the time was Jobs had vision. They didn't understand how valuable the technology was, otherwise I'm sure they wouldn't have let Jobs see it.

So, are you having family over for Easter?

Most of them live in Texas, but we use Skype so it's okay. I'm having a brunch at 11:00... prosciutto ham, egg quiche with crispy bacon in it, fruit salad, asparagus spears, a baked French toast thing that my daughter is making, and Debate Politics Gaius's famous biscuits! I'll be going out for dinner at the Club - others will do the cooking! What are your plans?

Sounds wonderful, esp. the French toast! I'm probably just going to read and rest today as I had a very busy work week last week and will have the same next week. Happy Easter!

Happy Easter to you, JC! Enjoy your day!

It has potentials of , for example, decrypting encryption algorithms in a fraction of the time.. minutes instead of centuries.

Jobs didnt steal from Xerox, it was Xerox who basically gave their inventions away to him because they didnt think it would amount to anything. Major blunder of course but it happens. When IBM wanted to use Apple's OS, Jobs refused, and so IBM went to a little known company called Microsoft...
