Former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell and his wife, Maureen, were convicted on charges of public corruption by a jury on Thursday.
Bob McDonnell was convicted on 11 corruption counts, according to The Washington Post; Maureen McDonnell on eight counts. She was also found guilty of obstruction of justice
The verdict was read Thursday afternoon in the federal court in Richmond, Virginia. The Republican ex-governor and his wife had together faced a 14-count indictment centered on corruption charges. The pair was accused of trading official government favors to a Richmond-area businessman for more than $165,000 in gifts and loans.
The McDonnells could face jail time and hefty fines depending on the verdict and sentencing. Legal experts have said that in the case of a conviction, an appeal would be expected.
