Manson follower Van Houten gets another shot at release

The things people - particularly damaged young people - do when under the control of a monster...

I hope she sees some freedom.

You think she has zero responsibility for her actions?

So what do we think? Has she "served her time"? Should she be released? Personally I say no way, no how. I know she was young. I know she is rehabilitated. But the Manson crimes are among the worst in our country's history. What she did to Mrs. LaBianca IMO prohibited her from ever having the luxury of a day of freedom.

I agree with this 100%. Each and every Manson clan member should die there. Period. Full stop.

Hmmmm, if it were possible, arrest, charge, try and convict "Brother Minister" Louis Farrakhan. He played Manson's role in the assassination of Malcolm X and there is no statute on murder.

Thomas Hagan, Thomas Johnson and Norman Butler all served between twenty and forty five years for the crime, and arguably the latter two might have been wrongfully convicted, but Brother Minister walked free despite ordering, for all practical purposes, in his official role as the second in command, the hit on Malcolm X.

I'd be ok with this.

Punishment has nothing to do with the justice system. We incarcerate people for public security. We provide opportunity for redemption. If someone is not a threat to the public and might seek redemption, what's the gain for us as society in keeping them incarcerated? Revenge? That's not justice.

Except that the death penalty still exists in this country, so perhaps punishment has something to do with it?

Life in prison is not cruel or unusual, heinous acts should earn a life sentence or death. I’ve said this in the past “give em to the family’s of the victims” but that would likely end in unusually cruel acts.

Her sentence was death until California changed it.

Yep, the "handling" of this case (which was tried, appealed and re-tried several times) was a mess. IIRC, her last sentence was something like 7 years to life yet she has been denied parole many (20?) times.

Did I not just explain the sheer volume of idiots? I don't mean you. I mean the state of affairs.

Ok, now saying that, how is she going to survive on the outside never having done it in the past? Where is she going to live and work?

That's her problem. If she wants to be outside - that's her choice.

Btw, she's 69. Is she eligible for pension?

We should dig up Leno LaBianca and his wife Rosemary to see what they say after she butchered them and smeared their blood on the walls of their home.

Let her rot in prison. This wasn't a bank hold up that went bad and she shot a clerk. This was demonic torture and butchering of two innocent victims.
Doubtful they'll have much to say.

She is 69 years old (thats still young enough to do plenty of damage) and according to reports Ive read has never really explained her role, took responsibility for her actions, or explained why it should be believed that she is rehabilitated. Hard to know the true will and mind of an individual, but sorry...based on te nature of the crime, Id be just fine with her spending the next 10-15 years working on a more convincing parole story.

All of that is taken into account when they grant parole or not.
