He actually didn't say they weren't. He said they fought valiantly and were our countrymen again. Which is true, because when those traitorous losers lost, they were forced to recognize the power of the Republic and submit to it. Not really, it's just facts. The Confederacy raised an army and went to war against the United States, which makes them traitors to the United States. They lost. That makes them loser traitors.
