Especially since my kin spoke with the hard 'ch' sound for ich vs. the softer 'sh' sound.

That reminds me of a classmate.
He had this hard ch.
And he was famous for saying once: "Ichchchchch geh nichchchcht in d' Kirchchch!" for: "I do not go to church!"
As he was the only one in class who used that hard ch.

On a tangent, many of the players in HBO’s “Band of Brothers” were from the UK. In a more recent offering, also HBO, “Succession,” there are more than one Brit. When they speak out of character, (interviews and such,) I always do a double-take. I have to concentrate too much using any accent long term.

Damien Lewis (Band of Brothers) explained that during an interview I heard on NPR. He said as kids growing up they were exposed to a lot of American TV shows, so it became natural for them to emulate an American accent.

I like Latin quotations - and I also like to alter them slightly.

for instance: Ceterum censeo Carthaginem non esse delendam.
Or: Ceterum censeo Rumpelum non esse delendum.

And who can tell a New Zealander from somebody else?

Those opinion polls often deliver a result that is in favour of those who paid for the poll .....

I guess I shouldn't be surprised that on a board of bigoted right wingers and fauxgressives how Eurocentric the poll is. No Yoruba? Zulu? Swahili? Arabic? Or languages spoken by black and brown people are inelegant and not beautiful, right?

If you are familiar with them vote for them.

I found Somali to be OK.

Really??? You can tell a scotsman by their accent. You can tell an american by their accent or an italian or a greek or an irish or an english or an australian. But you cannot tell a kiwi from their accent?

Or am i wrong here? You cannot even tell the difference between all these accents?

Isn't Kiwi simply Aussie Lite?

Blimey!

As you know I spend a lot of time in London on business. I find myself trying to speak like them when I'm there. I can't decide if they think it's charming or annoying as Hell. I love British accents.

Have you ever had a Brit say to you how much they love the American accent? Not trying to be funny but it seems as Americans love different accents is there any of them out there that like the American accent?

Yeah/nah!
You can always tell an aussie from a kiwi. If not by the accent then by if something of yours is not nailed down and has gone missing then it will be an aussie. Bloody convicts.

That's right.
Yes, I cannot recognize the Kiwi accent.
Sorry, but I can't.

I can recognize a lot of accents, but not Kiwi.

Do YOU recognize all the accents that are there in this world?

I just got back from 5 days in London. More than once I've been told how quaint my accent is!

To that I say: Nobody ever can please everybody.

Feel free to create a poll of your own choice, including all the languages that you like to choose.

A couple of weeks ago, I helped someone who ran out of gas on their motorcycle. Although he was from NYC, he has a huge rich Irish brogue

NYC Irishmen are awesome.

When I went to England, I met an Irishman who was visiting back from NYC for the first time in decades. He had this rich irish accent with a Manhattan overlay. THe words would roll, except every once in a while it would be just flat , like the word Manhatten would sound just like the average New Yorker... Very odd contrast.

I can distinguish the different accents. Sometimes i have a hard time placing which accent belongs where.

Perhaps your problem is a lack of experience. Go leave dusty old europe and come and holiday in the pacific isles for a few years and you will then be able to tell the differences in accents.

Come to Wales for a few years und you will be able to tell the diffence between the accents of Llanfairpwllgwyngyll and Llandudno. :peace

I once met a welsh woman with green eyes and red hair. Every time she spoke it was as if she was singing her accent was so lilting.

Unfortunately she also had the fiery temper of a red head.
