The counter protestors didnt attack first. The nazis came in with armament meant to kill as many people as possible. The UTR marchers went outside their designated zone to attack a multi ethnic church and brawl with people. Yes i can tell you unequivocally that nazis will kill you even if you dont provoke them. Those types of actions can work with certain groups, not all. Do you think Nazi's in WW2 would have cared they were being peaceful? Do you think the US south during slavery would have particularly open to a peaceful protest by slaves? Or that those protesting would have been beaten and killed.

Gandhi and MLK worked because the country they were protesting for the most part was decent and accepted that human rights belong to everyone (and that was not always the case in those countries) Gandhi's actions would not have worked 30 years prior, MLK 100 years prior would have been killed long before
