How important is it for the President to have some sort of military experience, and how important is it to you in whether you vote for someone?

For me, military experience is irrelevant.

btw, I am someone with a boatload of military experience.

I like that Buttigieg is a veteran.

Not important. The Joint Chiefs of Staff fill in the gaps for the President so he/she can make informed military decisions.

It's not a make or break thing with me, but I would prefer the president to have had military experience. If you are going to send military personnel off to possibly die, it would help to have that mindset of what you are asking them to do.

However, if there are two candidates (one having former military experience and one not) I will look towards their policy and where they stand on issues as a priority over military experience.

For me, military experience is not required but is desired. Going to war is perhaps the gravest decision a President can make. I'd prefer a guy that has experience in the matter and understands the process.

Not a deal breaker, but it would be nice if he or she knew a little about it before they send people in, risking their lives for what may or may not be worthy.

The President wouldn’t have the role of Commander in Chief if the founders wanted the Generals to make the decisions for him.

The founders hadn’t planned on someone with the mind of a toddler hopped up on sugar, fast food and Adderall to be holding the highest office in the land, either.

Then opening the door to that possibility by allowing anyone 35 and up to be elected was their error.

Yes. I agree that this whole “anybody can be president” experiment has gone terribly awry, and needs to be demolished with fire.

It is something a President should have. However, in an all-volunteer military that is unlikely to happen among Democrats since all Democrats are natural born cowards and can only be found serving in the military during the draft.

Military experience isn't a necessary qualification for me.

I do, however, draw a line when a candidate claims he "likes people who weren't captured' and denigrates POW's. Could you be less clueless and supporting of the military?

I certainly respect somebody who served, but it’s not and never has been a primary consideration.

As opposed to who? Cadet Bone Spurs? Remind me of how many Republican presidents really served. As I recall, Carter served as a lieutenant in the Navy during WWII while Reagan was cooling his heels stateside for the duration.

That question sent me straight to my reference library. I found this:

"Patriotism, n. An expression of one’s love of country. Politicians go to great lengths to express their patriotism once safely past the age of military service." A Modern Dictionary, Fragmentary Press, 2016, Chelm, IA

Season's best to all.

Trump was a registered Democrat until 1988, and like Clinton, both dodged the draft. However, the Democrat President you mentioned, who served in the military during the draft, pardoned the POS Democrat cowards for dodging the draft, destroying military morale in the process.

I think it should be a constitutional requirement.

Having military experience shows the person loves his country enough to risk his life for it. Getting out of it in a sleazy way is not a plus, in my opinion.

I think military experience would help a president understand the seriousness of war. Being there would not be the same as reading about it.

I wouldn't vote for a candidate simply on whether or not they had military experience, but it would definitely be a big plus. And, unfortunately, it's something that most women don't have.
