(CNN) — Joe Biden will announce his presidential bid on Thursday with an online video, sources familiar with the plans confirm to CNN, finally answering one of the lingering questions hanging over the 2020 Democratic race.

The former vice president's team has been laying the campaign groundwork for months, with Biden's decision growing less secretive or suspenseful by the day. But now that he has given the green light to his advisers, Biden is facing one of the biggest challenges of his half-century career in politics.

He is scheduled to hold his first campaign event in Pittsburgh on Monday, a source said, and plans to hit the road to the early-voting states of Iowa, South Carolina and New Hampshire in the coming days.

So what will this do to the race? Good, bad or indifferent on his chances?

I think he's too old personally. Attack me for being an ageist, I don't care. He is too old for 2 terms.

Old. White. Male. Heterosexual. Likes women. Likes children. Isn't a pure socialist. Is an old school union Democrat. He hasn't a chance in the Democratic primary.

Biden can't even keep is dates right, first he was to announce this Wednesday but that has all changed. What does that tell you, he as a staff that has no clue what their doing. How stupid can Biden be to have a staff that can't even get his announcement date correct.

That's pretty much how I see it. Weird Uncle Joe should, however, serve as a little reminder of how far left the democrat party has veered.

Meh. Will be interesting to see how it impacts his poll numbers now that Bernie has started to surpass him.

I think Biden is a big mistake for Democrats to run against Trump, then again I think over half the field is problematic at best in pulling off a win anyway.

I think his time is likely past. I don't like to think about the chances. Obama was one of the very few Democrats in relatively recent memory that could campaign well. Between Trump and Bush, they may have gotten too used to saying "look at their guy! Their guy sucks!" Even if it's true, it only gets you so far. And it can make you complacent.

That said, I'm not sure I'm excited for any in their field. Harris, a prosecutor (against whom I have a general professional gripe), oversaw a drug lab scandal. Unless she's changed her policies, her initial suggestions were flat-out dangerous. For example, I recall reading a WaPo summary talking about how she wanted to simultaneously increase tax credits and switch to single-payer.

Look, I want single-payer but it would be financial suicide to switch to it without raising taxes significantly. The savings comes from paying less in premiums than one pays more in new taxes. She wanted to do it without new taxes. And, what, run 3 trillion a year deficits? There's no way for that to end well.

Sanders? Way too far left for me. I suppose I'd vote for him against Trump and pray the Dems don't get supermajorities while he's in office. After all, a president can only get away with so much re: legislation, and I'm not worried about Sanders use of executive powers as I am with Trump. But that's really not such a great argument in favor of a candidate.

Beto? Eh. Haven't heard enough, and he has little experience.

The others? Nobody is really standing out for me. I guess we'll just see.

He can't keep his dates straight. Ok. Whereas Trump lies about everything and when he's not lying says incoherent things by accident, like suggesting that over a hundred million people were killed in a single terrorist attack. I could get into all the corruption he has engaged in, but I don't want the thread to divert to countering your defensive lies in Trump's favor.

Instead, I'll just note that whatever bad traits Biden may share with Trump, Trump is about a thousand times worse in regard to those traits.

If he thinks he's going to run for two terms, his Saturn return falls in his second term and he will loose.

If he thinks he'll decide then, then he's ignorant.

I'm pulling for Klobuchar and Warren, which will be a long pull, because they're not so astrological win strong candidates and for either of them to win would break the model for the first time since 1900 with both predictors wrong.

Predicting US Presidential elections

Bernie, Biden 7, Tulsi, Trump 5, Warren 1, Amy 0, Clinton -1, Pete -6, Kamala -11, Beto -15.

He is also inflicted with White Privilege ... (grin)

Another old geezer in the Dem side. And a dunce at that.

Hey, what's your opinion of Seth Moulton? I know he's probably not your rep but wondered if you knew much about him.

I agree with almost everything you wrote here.

That is ****ing hilarious, a cultists calling out a candidate who's staff may or may not made a mistake!!!

How many on his staff are awaiting prison time???

Weird uncle Joe, really cultists are going after a guy with personal space issues while supporting a self admitted sexual predator???

I'll support an old guy that likes to comfort and hug people over someone who goes after a married woman like a bitch and grab her ***** any day!!!

No idea actually. He's in a different district so I didn't really pay attention to him.

In all honesty, I haven't paid attention on the federal level for a while given how the GOP has been behaving. Basically, ever since I saw their behavior under Obama they've had me voting party-line in favor of Dems on the federal level. State is naturally different.

Wait...except Scott Brown. I actually voted for him over Warren since I couldn't stand her campaign/speaking style, which is unfortunate because the actual policies she's worked on aren't bad. But the way she puts things is such a turn-off. And Brown didn't do anything I considered a fireable offense.

i don't have a preference yet. my top issue is defeating Trump. that is job one. if it's Biden, so be it. if not, pick the person who is most likely to win.

I've had about enough of the old guard Dems. That said, I will vote for the Dem presidential candidate no matter who it is.

Biden has a chance of being the nominee, and the only chance I think he has is to jump into the lane that no one in the field currently occupies---the center. There are already 20 people vying for the loony, left socialist lane, if Biden appeals to where likely the majority of democrats are--center left--he may win the nomination. After all, with the number of people running, he only needs like 30 of the primary vote to likely win a given state. If he goes full blown socialist-loving, reparations-promising, gun-grabbing, free-loading liberal, he will disappear into the pack in a week or so.

The center is the key here, and I actually think he's one of the most likely to go there.

Is this going to be Hillary vs. Bernie all over again? This sets up so much conflict and confusion I don't even know what to think. If it is argued either is too old, then they're both too old, or white, or male. Are they going to somehow take each other out and somebody else is going to take the nomination? Will Bernie stay in just to get support and then endorse the 3rd up?

Biden is okay but is he really a good fit for Democrats these days? Bernie has strong populist support and a visionary message, but what does Biden have? The establishment, name recognition, more of the same, little else. The way he handled his handsy past and made jokes, I really have to wonder is this a good idea?

I really hope a coherent path forward emerges because I see a potential future train wreck.

Boatload of MEH from my perspective. I guess now we officially know who the DNC candidate is; the question is who out of the others can position themselves as the frontrunner.

I liked Brown. I voted for him when he challenged Jeanne Shaheen here. He had no chance but it endeared him to me more. And in retrospect, in your state, beating Martha Coakley wasn't such a feat. She was a bad candidate.
