Michael Hayden, former director of both the National Security Agency and the CIA, described Trump as a "useful fool, some naif, manipulated by Moscow, secretly held in contempt, but whose blind support is happily accepted and exploited."

Your thoughts?

I think after multiple bankruptcies and financial issues Trump got money from somewhere he shouldn't and that is the origins of our first Russian made President. He probably didn't even think he was laundering money or getting money illegally from oligarchs. He doesn't really strike me as someone that would ask a lot of questions about where his financing came from.

Those are strong charges and it's alarming to even hear them from people who spent their entire adult lives working in defense of this nation and ended their careers at or near the top of their professions--with access to sub-compartmented information that's restricted to very few people in the federal government.

So you have to believe that they're idiots, or they're secretly subversives working against the people and interests of the United States.

Or they really fear/suspect that we have a compromised individual in the Oval Office.

Putin is extremely bright and he has tons more experience at politics and international affairs than Trump and he has not only his own country and his own government behind him but China too and Trump has none of that so Trump should be able to be managed....but I have no doubt that Putin has great respect for what Trump has accomplished in such a short time with so little experience.

You must be livid about Republican "deep state" conspiracies then.

Amazing. All of this cyber 'warfare' and meddling in our election happened while Obama was at the helm, but inexplicably, Trump is left holding the bag.
Flipping brilliant move on Obama's part.
So, basically, the last President who let it happened sits back and watches the current President be blamed and ridiculed as illegitimate because once again, he kicked the can down the road.
Whether you believe Trump is some "naif" or not, Obama's untouchable nature must have him laughing his ass off.

These considerations are irrelevant to the OP.

FYI Obama impose sanctions Trump delayed for a long time sanctions set by Congress and the Senate. But that debate is another thread

Pretty much. What amazes me is that so few conservatives have caught onto this.

Trump Putin's useful idiot? No, I don't think so.

Does Trump say a lot stupid stuff sometimes. Oh definitely.
Should this stupid stuff be taken seriously? Probably not. Probably more self-detrimental if you do.

Not taken is seriously at least not until the stupid stuff shows up in policy, which it hasn't.

I spent my entire life as a Republican and would have tangentially qualified as a member of the "deep state." I was a Naval Intelligence Officer assigned to a three-letter agency but detailed to the Pentagon as a briefer. I've left both in the last 18 months. I kind of miss my old job. I don't miss the GOP.

Sort of, but not exactly. You leave out a lot of important facts. Here are a few:
https://www.politicususa.com/2018/0...against-publicizing-the-russian-meddling.html

Republicans need to look no further than the nearest mirror if they’re looking for who to blame for Russian’s attack on the United States. Mitch McConnell refused to do the right thing for his country when the Russians attacked us. Instead, he did what he always does; when asked by President Obama to take a unified stand against Russia, McConnell threatened President Obama.

Now that the Muller indictment of the 13 Russians and 3 Russian businesses makes the fact that the Russians attacked the United States in the lead up to the 2016 election unimpeachable, Republicans are doing what they do — blaming President Obama.

However, reality is again at odds with the, at best, traitor-enabling Republicans.

The Senate Majority Leader of the United States, Republican Mitch McConnell (R-KY), threatened President Obama against publicizing Russian meddling before the 2016 election.

“It was Barack Obama who wanted to issue a joint statement condemning Russian election meddling with Republicans, but Mitch McConnell refused to cooperate,” Jason Easley had to explain in response to Trump transition team member and House Intelligence Committee Chair Devin Nunes'(R-CA) absurd suggestion that if the Russians did attack the United States and Donald Trump and the Russian Congress were doing nothing, it was Obama’s fault.

On December 9th, 2016, Adam Entous, Ellen Nakashima and Greg Miller published a very important piece in the Washington Post that revealed a behind the scenes tussle between President Obama and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

They wrote that by mid-September, the Obama White House was looking to take action on Russia and asked, in a secret meeting with the Gang of 12 – a bipartisan group of House and Senate leaders – for a show of “show of solidarity and bipartisan unity” against Russian meddling in the election.

Guess what Obama got.

A big fat no, led by Mitch McConnell. A kick in the gut to democracy and patriotism by the Republican Senator.

Useful idiot.

Putin is handling him deftly.

He's too much of an idiot to be an asset.

Thank you for your service Sir.

LOL at the idea that Putin respects anything about Trump.

Putin is just doing what he has to do to keep Trump on the string.

Putin is an Abnormally bright guy, especially compared to Americans, Which has a lot to do with why our Geniuses keep being wrong about him.

A man with Putin's cloak and dagger credentials does not have "admiration" for someone who can manage to "fail upward" as a master con man.
Putin respects him the way you or I would "respect" a disposable tool, use it till it breaks and then throw it away.

Putin runs by Success/Fail just as Trump does and so Trumps vast success does not get ignored by Putin as so many ignorant Americans do..... and Putin has an expertise grasp on how power works and respects those who weld power with the expertise Trump does.

You get to be wrong yet again.

Not taken is seriously at least not until the stupid stuff shows up in policy, which it hasn't.

But it has, to wit:

The Policy which prosecutes Class B misdemeanor first crossers resulting in the separation of children from parents in an incompetent fashion such that the government is finding rejoining parents with children almost impossible

The tax policy of which 87% of the benefits go to the rich resulting and skyrocketing deficits is a myopic policy

The repeal of hundreds of environmental regulations which accelerate corporation's ability to pollute the environment is a disastrous policy

The ban on immigrants from Muslim nations is a terrible policy making it difficult for many large corporations to find employees, there are simply not enough Americans applying for these jobs, let alone disrupting students on scholarships families reuniting and visiting the country and making life difficult for many people noting that not one terrorist ever arrived to America from any of the banned countries.

Trump has revealed to the world that he a small-minded,petulant, petty man, a veritable buffoon,

It would seem to me that in order for any individual to make a nation great that that individual would have to be great himself.

That would not be Trump.

Opinions would differ.

Middle class tax cut has allowed many to keep more of what they've earned.

The EPA needed trimming back as they've over stepped their bounds, as their court losses will attest.

Muslim travel ban? When 97% of the worlds Muslims aren't banned?

Let the labor market tighten and raise compensation. It's about time after decades of stagnant wage growth.

So like I said, opinions on policies differ. Or would you prefer the tepid and anemic GDP growth?
