And before the 1600's? I'll find out what name they call themselves but they really don't like you guys. Yes, I find american liberals/leftist mostly objectionable. I have no such feelings about the chinese. The chinese kids around here are mostly college kids. They seem nice enough, just like all college kids. They don't always seem to get along with the japanese kids tho. Imagine that.
The people here before that are the Taiwanese aborigines -- considered to be proto-Austronesian people. In the 17th century, small numbers of people from Fujian began coming to Taiwan, initially in Dutch-controlled Anping (Tainan) but later in the parts controlled by Koxinga's Dongning Kingdom. After the Manchus conquered western Taiwan, and spent most of the 18th century restricting immigration to the island, mostly men from Fujian came here (either seasonally or permanently), had babies with local plains aboriginal women, and those children became part of the growing Minnan settlements in the southern and central parts of the western plain of Taiwan.
