I don't know how accurate this is, but my thoughts are that those identifying as "Centrists" are non-partisans, perhaps former moderate R's or D's, who now simply take a cafeteria approach to governing.

There’s a number of ways to interpret them, but one aspect that I think is underplayed is the extent to which there’s a difference in how people living in more urban states or communities interpret the meaning of “centrist” or “moderate” and those who come from rural states or communities interpret the terms.

To a large extent, I am more in line with rural centrists than urban ones. We tend to be more pro-gun (or at least ambivalent about the merits of gun control), pro-fracking , skeptical about green politics, etc.

Seems to me that Centrists have core values equal to most people. I've met many people that lean either left or right depending on the subject. "I'm for single payer but I'm also certainly against Roe VS Wade"
"I'm for the 2nd amendment but also want a national registry for everyone that wants to buy a gun" "I don't care for Trump and frankly, I'm not over thrilled by Biden". Lots of people have values that in some way, do not specifically fit with the strict definition of Conservative or Progressive. I'm certainly not stating something that most people don't know....
