In major embarrassment to GOP, House fails to pass massive Farm Bill in face of conservative Republi

He said from day one he wanted the wall. Why are Democrats so afraid of the wall?

I’m not afraid of the wall at all, trump said Mexico will pay for it so as soon as he gets that money from Mexico he can have his wall. I’m not going to support that liar in using taxpayer money to do so so. You want a wall, send in YOUR money for it. Trump can pay for that wall out of his own money if he wants it bad enough. So can you.

Tell Trump to hurry up and get that money from Mexico for the wall. He promised that MEXICO was going to pay for it NOT the taxpayer. Tell Trump to quit lying then. YOU'RE WELCOME!

ding ding ding

Trump promised American citizens would not have to pay for the wall.

That's my point. Dems would rather sit there and do nothing. Their partisanship is more important to them than to join with moderate Republicans to actually get something done.

No what the Dems won’t do is support the liar in chief in using taxpayer money for a wall TRUMP promised he would make Mexico pay for. Get the money from Mexico first or no wall.

Moderate Republicans are a mythical creature, like unicorns.
I do have to laugh at the idea that the Democrats are at fault for the Republican controlled government not being about to get legislation passed? Instead of Democrats, who generally get locked out of decisions, should working with moderate Republicans. I have a better idea. Let's throw enough Republicans out of Congress so that the Democrats have a majority. I can guarantee that legislation will be passed.

I laugh at the party which obstructed Obama at every turn crying foul now when Democrats won't help Trump with his misbegotten agenda.

It was ultimately the ultra-right "Freedom Caucus" that scuttled the bill. Mid-terms will change that. There are more than a few GOP who are sick and tired of the "Freedom Caucus" assery.

A sweeping farm bill failed in the House on Friday in a major embarrassment to GOP leaders who were unable to placate conservative lawmakers demanding commitments on immigration.

then later:

The outcome exposed what is becoming an all-out war within the House GOP over immigration, as well as the the intractable divisions within the GOP conference that have bedeviled House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.) and will be certain to dog both the top lieutenants in line to replace him, Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.).

With moderate Republicans maneuvering to force a vote on legislation offering citizenship to some younger immigrants who arrived in the country as children, conservatives revolted. The farm bill became a bargaining chip as they lobbied leadership for a vote on a hard-line immigration bill.

Yes, this is an embarrassment for the GOP, no question. But the Democrats are being just as hard headed as the Republicans were the entire time Obama was President.

Will this madness ever end?

Hopefully the moderates will lose and this insane idea of rewarding people who come to America illegally can end.

How can the Dems rein in the Freedom Caucus? They answer to Paul Ryan, not the Democrats.

What actions have the moderate Republicans taken to rein in the Freedom Caucus? I think I missed them. All.

If you really believe that your party can change, you have to be part of the driving force behind that change. That might mean making a fuss at party hq in New Hampshire.

Americans need the GOP to change because the country needs at least two viable political parties to keep each other in check. One party rule is never good, just look at the disaster going on now.

At this point though, the GOP base hates the Democrats and liberals so much that I Believe they'll continue to support the circus in Washington for the sole reason that they know it pisses off liberals. The party will likely implode in the very near future. What will rise out of the rubble will be anyone's guess. Hopefully the moderates can pick up the pieces, and get the party back on track. It won't be easy though.

Good luck with that...I found few willing to act and a base rabid to destroy them if they did. This new base was no nasty I actually gave up and became Independent...The base has killed the party and the leaders are too corrupt and afraid to do anything about it.

The base didn't just get "rabid' out of nowhere though. This was the result of right wing media and pundits for years viscously attacking Obama, calling him everything from a socialist, to a communist, to a racist foreign born anti white muslim, etc. And then comes Donald Trump, the ultimate opportunist, who becomes the lead birther in 2011 and pushes that nonsense for 5 damn years, all while GOP politicians ignored it, and some even condoned it. The GOP and it's media created the environment for someone like Donald Trump to thrive it. They created the rabid base, and the rabid base chose their leader in Trump, even though the GOP BEGGED them in the primaries NOT to vote for him. Well, it's too late for that now. They now can't control the monster that they themselves created.

Unfortunately it's now mostly party before country.

You're just being hardheaded. No Speaker can reign in the Freedom Caucus by themselves. It can't be done. If moderate Democrats worked together with moderate Republicans, they would have the necessary votes to pass legislation and the Freedom Caucus would be irrelevant. But, Democrats would rather be the resistance and leave Ryan out there to die, at the expense of the American people. Partisan politics is more important to Democrats than to actually pass legislation to help the country.

So it's the Democrats' responsibility to rein in members of the other party's caucus?

I'm not being hardheaded. I'm being logical. I think you should try it yourself. You and I both know that the Freedom Caucus belongs to the Republicans, and in no way at all do the Democrats have any control over them or any responsibility for them. Every Republican, from McConnell to Ryan to Trump, is responsible.

Did you at any time ever say it was up to Paul Ryan to control the Black Congressional Caucus, and rein them in, and work to change their minds? If you did, I'm sure you can point me to those posts on here.

So you want Congress to play nice with each other? That's sweet. It also would be a first in the history of Congress.

Congress is supposed to work together to solve the country's problems. Democrats are playing the resistance and sitting back and watching and laughing at Republicans fighting with the Freedom Caucus. If Democrats quit being the resistance and did what they are supposed to do, work with Republicans to solve the country's problems, then the Freedom Caucus would be irrelevant. They just want to bask in the joy of the Republicans being a split party while not realizing at the same time that Trump is president because their own party is split. If it hadn't been for Bernie Sanders and Jill Stein, Hillary would be president AND their own party is split on this very day. The far left progressives are tearing the Democratic party apart, just as the Freedom Caucus and Tea Party have torn apart the Republican party.

When during the 8 years of Obama did Republicans ever attempt to work with Democrats?

You mean like the Republicans worked with the Democrats while Obama was President?

Just stop. I'm being honest that there is partisanship, and I'm being both honest AND realistic in saying that the Freedom Caucus is the responsibility of the Republicans - NOT the Democrats. Just like I don't and never would blame the Republicans for what the CBC or the far left Democrats say and do. Why hasn't Paul Ryan changed Nancy Pelosi? Why hasn't Mitch McConnell changed Dianne Feinstein? Because they can't. Nor should they try. It isn't their problem.

When during the 8 years of Obama did Republicans ever attempt to work with Democrats?

Never. However, when Obama stated at the begginning of his first term that the republicans can come along for the ride but they had to stay in the back of the bus, it didn't help his cause.

If Congress (on both sides of the isle) actually worked for the Constituents that they "claim to represent" - we wouldn't see this type of "madness".

They stood in the way. They meaning, your Democrat comrades. And yes, they did have a problem with Trump's proposed border funding.

You got no room for this crying. A minority in the house doesn't actually have the ability to stand in anyone's way. You wanted the GOP to have the majority and they do. Now you have to own it.

The interesting thing is, Congress has worked across the aisle in our history. Hell, in MY history (my time on Earth) they have done this. Most recent examples are when O'Neill and the Democrats worked closely with Reagan, and Gingrich and the Republicans worked closely with Clinton. And in both cases, within Congress, both parties worked with each other.

For the last 10 years or so, the divide has gotten bigger, and I think, sadly, part of what you're seeing today came out of the very public proclamations from the Republicans, while Obama was in the WH, that the Republicans wouldn't work with him - or his party. I guess paybacks are a bitch, and as much as I don't care for the Democrats, they are human and are exhibiting human behavior. The Republicans obstructed them, and now they are doing the same thing.

Damn sad, if you ask me. I miss the days of the opposing party working with the President and each other. It worked great during the Reagan and Clinton years. We need to bring it back. But it won't happen with Trump in office, and it won't happen as long as one party controls all 3 branches of government - either party.

For some odd reason, people are rewriting history. The minority party can't stop jack ****. Just ask the Republicans how well they stopped the passage of the ACA and Dodd-Frank when they were the minority party.

I guess anything to cover for Trump's ineptitude as the leader of the party in control of the WH and both Houses of Congress is good enough for the citizens of Trump Fan Nation, though. It fails every time, but everyone should get a trophy for participating.

I think in the past the parties wanted to enact policies which is why they would work across the aisle to get what they want. They no longer want to enact policies as much as there merely want the power that comes with being the majority. And they will scorch the earth to get there.

The moderate Republicans need to do a much better job of shunning the clowns in the Freedom Caucus who are, IMO, out of control. The moderate Dems, to your point, need to join ranks with the moderate Republicans to accomplish this.

That's the problem. There are very, very few moderate Republicans in the House. The redefined establishment Republicans are just conservatives. The Tea Party Republicans that are die hards are populists, but aren't quite willing to embrace Trump's every whim. Then you have the Trump fluffers. That's the balance of power in the House GOP. The moderates are neither numerous, nor influential.
