Justify will try on Saturday something that is one of the hardest things to do, and that's win horse racing's Triple Crown. Good luck Justify!

If anyone has never seen this, it's the vide of the 1973 when the greatest horse in history, Secretariat, won the Triple Crown for the first time in 25 years. But not only that, it was the way he did it. 45 years later and his record time is STILL the record, and in my lifetime it will never be broken. Chic Anderson's call is one of the most famous in sports - and it's been said that Secretariat's performance in 1973 was one of the 5 greatest achievements in sports history.

If you never saw this, it's worth the watch. Only 3 minutes start to finish. It's the greatest achievement I ever saw. And Jack Nicklaus, the brilliant golfer, loved to tell the story about when he watched this live. He was alone in his apartment and he said he started crying as the race was going on. When asked why he cried, he said that all his life he strived for perfection and he didn't believe it was possible, until this race. He said this was perfect. And it was.

Secretariat was an amazing animal & what got me interested in horse racing. Louisiana Downs opened the next year, in 1974. I loved to go there to watch the horses run, and watching the people go nutz during the stretch was a bonus

I get chills just remembering it.

I will watch the movie again before post time.

I would really like him to do it. I have followed mike smith since the eighties when he road at Canterbury downs. ( I assume it's the same guy). He made me a bit of money. If he was on a horse I had money on him.

Unfortunately I do not think they will pull it out, I think the longer track will do them in, unless they build to large of a lead to overcome as be fades at the end.

LOVE Mike Smith! He's a great jockey. He rode the brilliant Zenyatta for most of her career. Yes, it is the same Mike Smith. He started his career at Canterbury Downs in the early 1980s.

I also don't think Justify will do it. Just 3 more strides and Wayne Lukas's longshot Bravazo would have won the Preakness. But it's always fun to watch and hope when a horse has won the first two legs.

Brings back many memories, for many years I was always there on opening weekend.

There is something about a horse race that gets your blood pumping like few other things.

I hope justify does it but idk if I would bet on him on the nose to win.

Horse racing is the greatest sport in the world, in my humble horse race loving opinion. Not to mention, race horses are the most beautiful of all animals.

I'm going with Vino Rosso to take the Belmont. I don't like Justify's #1 post position.

Watched it live :)

And many times since then.

Good luck Justify!

Would be good to see it happen. That said there is a reason it is real hard to accomplish, the Belmont bring a large part of that, that extra distance and new horses running makes it really hard. Will not miss it, we might see history made.

I wonder how much the horses know what is going on. Specifically, do they know that they are trying to beat the other horses or do they just know they are trying to run fast?

Yup. Fresh legs are often the reason the last leg is lost by the one who won the first two. Breeding. The distance. So much working against a horse that ran in the first two legs. Which is what made Secretariat's performance that much more astounding. His quarter fractions got faster with each quarter. That is impossible to do, yet he did it.

I can't wait until Saturday, but I don't hold out a lot of hope for Justify. I'll be emotionally behind him, but won't be betting on him because I think it's going to be so very hard.

Both, actually. Many of the great ones hate being behind another horse. Sometimes it's as simple as "I don't like dirt being kicked up in my nostrils", but mostly it's an alpha feeling that I need to be in the front of this pack.

They are beautiful but they can be high strung. I worked for a short time on a horse ranch a few years ago and they had a mule that was crossed with a thoroughbred. There were a couple times I thought his goal in life was to kill me. Particularly when it was my job to control him while he was getting a pedicure.
I have not seen the line up buy i would not be surprised to see a Lucas horse take it.

Off the track Thoroughbred racehorses are the most petulant of creatures. Most of my horses in my life were OTTBs, and they would freak out when a leaf dropped in front of them.

I love Wayne Lukas, in spite of the fact that he's about 127 years old.

Yes. I have signed pic of Secretariat in his #2 crossing the finish line at the Belmont. Secretariat did not sign it but Turcotte did - his jockey. It is a prized possession.

An interesting note. American Pharoah, the last horse to win the triple crown, would have lost to Secretariat by 10 lengths in the Belmont. There's a comparison on youtube somewhere.

I admire American Pharoah (name is misspelled in real life which always irked me). But he wasn't even in the same league with Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Citation, or any of the previous Triple Crown winners. GREAT horse in a mediocre year.

I have a few signed pictures of Secretariat, also signed by Turcotte, who I was lucky enough to meet a few times. One of them is the oh so famous shot on him looking behind him during the Belmont as he was wondering where the other horses were - and down the stretch, they were basically in another state. This isn't my picture but it's the same one.

I was at Belmont when Affirmed beat Alydar to win the TC. I bet Affirmed. 1978

I was at Belmont when Coastal beat Pleasant Colony to to deprive Pleasant Colony of the TC. I bet Coastal

I was at Belmont when Arts & Letters beat Majestic Prince to to deprive Majestic Prince of the TC. I bet Majestic Prince

After Coastal beat PC, as I recall it was 1980 I took us 3 hours to get out of the parking lot and from
then on I became a TC watcher on TV.

I didn't go to Belmont in Secretariats year, He does hold record times for all three TC races and the consensus remains he is the greatest,
As a long time racing fan I think Dr. Fager was the most superb horse ever to race

I am so pissed right now. There is a tornado warning in my area and the only channel that I get the race is on bas weatber on Instead
****ing tornadoes are a hundred miles away I will worry a out them when they get here.

When I was in Saratoga few years back, the racing museum featured a look back at Affirmed. I have always though he was the weakest of the TC winners but I haver to say that my opinion greatly changed after watching most of his races in succession. He was a monster... a machine. He had the most grit, I think, of any other great. Just my 2 cents.

And so we have another TC winner. At least his name is spelled properly. Buffers is one hell of a trainer.

That Secretariat still holds all three race records and 2 of the 3 track records 45 years later is all we need to know.

Bob Beamon broke a long jump standard that lasted essentially for 30 years by 2 feet. That new unassailable record only stood for 20 years.

The fix was in. California Chrome was robbed.
