I appreciate it. Unfortunately, I can sort of relate. I didn't know half of my grandparents. My dad's dad died before I was even born, and my mom's dad died when I was really young. I was only close to my grandma's. My mom's mom I was the closest to. Unfortunately, since she died, we tend to not have as many family gatherings as we used to.
I have a similar experience with regards to my mother's dad. Died a couple years before I was born. My grandmother remarried the year I was born and that man was my grandad. No secrecy. I know families back in the day tried to hide whose related to whom during times of what was considered unorthodox but this was clear. It was rather dark. My maternal grandad was apparently a raging drunk who quit cold turkey and was clean for about three years before he was killed walking across the street by, with a little sense of irony you can guess it, a drunk driver. Through the bulk of his life he apparently was a miserable human being as a drunk and from what I've heard about him, and this sound ****ty but, I'm glad I didn't meet him. The man my grandmother married the year I was born was a really good man and I'm glad to have had him in my family.
That said, when doing genealogy, you'll find that the skeletons make some of the best stories though. So thanks to you for that grandpa but still... **** you all the same.
