Homeless in Hawaii

If one must be homeless, why not do so on a tropical island? I hear meth is a big problem there.

substance abuse is one of the leading causes of homelessness.
you simply can't function and even those that have jobs most of their money
ends up going to their drug of choice.

The "brilliant" idea of using Medicaid as a means to get (convert?) federal funding to support the local homeless population is likely to spread. Not much was said about how that worked but it sure sounded like fraud to me. If one can be "prescribed" a home then why not meals and utilities too?

utah implemented a program that put homeless people in an apartment and they were assigned counselors to help get them cleaned up get them a job and start being
self sufficient. it seems to have worked a great deal and it cost less money than what they were doing.

Wealth disparity at its finest. You are either upper middle class or your a practically destitute. The weather accomodates homelessness as well. Here in santa fe, we are at 7,000 feet elevation which means gentle summers. They flood here in the summer and in the winter a lot head to Phoenix and cali.

well if you are homeless that means are you probably not working or making income. that has nothing to do with wealth disparity.
the people that are upper middle class have a reason they are upper middle class.

there is a reason these people are homeless and it ranges for a reason. most of them were professionals at one time had families etc ...
and lost it do to addiction. it isn't the working guy's fault these people are where they are.

This thread is loaded with good examples of 'compassionate conservatism' and Jesus's teachings of helping the poor. ;)

Sad what Republicans in this country have become.

I agree, but it isn't just a compassionate conservative thing, and side swiping Christians while you are at it doesn't add to the discussion other than what lack of compassion some show for the ____ doesn't give another a right to show lack of compassion for ____.
Most people have compassion, so don't let a few posters fool you. Look at what happens after disasters. After Katrina, i.e., rich, poor, black, white, cons, libs didn't hesitate to help. We all came together and pitched in.
We have to understand that most of us are just a paycheck or a storm away from needing a helping hand ourselves. We also have grown weary of the fact that, in a country as resourceful and affluent as ours, with resources available to those in need, we never seem to catch up on the problem.
We also have been fooled by many thinking they are in need, when in fact some are just not willing, and we don't like to be taken advantage of.

Yep, especially since the op was just kind of throwing it out there and allowed people to form their own opinion. We sure got that.

I agree, but in my own defense I did say 'this thread' so I wasn't painting all Cons as hypocrites.

But even in 'real life' I have noticed more hypocrisy on the Right lately, especially among the so called 'religious right'. The majority of them backing Trump pretty much proves my point. You can't get anymore un-compassinate and un-Christian than Trump.

I read that the average cost for a one bedroom apt. is $1800. a month. No wonder they have a problem.

yeah and the median income in hawaii is about 73k a year.

so you have a perfect storm of market effects going on.

you have limited space
you have a lot of people living in that limited space.

next you have people making money to support that rent.
like any big inner city those are the rent prices. if you move outside the city you
can probably get cheaper rent.

they already have title

The video said they were not able to get title to the little mangrove forest where they were camped.

Yep, most times when a place has a booming economy there's a lot of homeless people.

Read an article awhile back about California's housing problems and prices. 1 woman was a nurse, makes about $150k a year, and she drives 2 hours to work because where she works is so expensive to live she can't afford a place there.

$150k a year and she can't afford to buy or rent a place to live?

Yep. All the compassionate liberal techies have run her out of the area she works in.

The worst part is, like a meth addict, the state depends on taxes from her commute and income to support it's habit.

What happens when she realizes the sacrifice isn't worth it, and she joins others beating an exit from California?

The looming disaster in California should concern everyone.

Stop with the Con BS line that California is on the verge or disaster and some 3rd world country.

The housing problem is because California's economy is booming, because California it is NOT a red hell hole like Mississippi. You hate it in Cali. so much start the exodus and move to Mississippi.

Turn off Fox.

I don't care about the video the Hawaiian natives own vast tracts of land in Hawaii

Apparently not on Oahu. If thy have land, it's probably worthless scrub land like that crap we gave the American Indians here on the mainland.

lol...you gotta love it when conservatives whine about techies while using techie stuff to whine about techies.

, You really need to do your homework

I'm just going by what I saw in the video. Perhaps you can post some info that shows what the natives own on the islands and what the land is being used for.

OK, but that is not using federal Medicaid funds to do so.

Yep, and that 'all the Techies' are Libs and they and they alone control the housing market.

It is confusing talking to rabid Cons, 1 post they paint all Libs as complete morons and idiots, and then in the next post they paint them all as geniuses who know all and control all.

No, that is what the open borders crowd does with them

A border wall with strong Border Patrol backup would have kept those illegal aliens in Mexico where they belong

As for the homeless lets open homeless shelters far away from civilization and keep them there till they come to their senses
Maybe something like Soviet era Labor camps way out in the sticks?

No one owns land in Hawaii it's leased from various agencies that manage it in trust for the Hawaiians

Doesn't look to be true in Hawaii. They have a lack of affordable housing.

That's bizarre. I did not know that. Thanks.

They woudl not have to work unless they wanted to

Just attend meeting with the shrinks and take their methadone treatmenst if perscribed

If they ever do come to their senses and want to live productive lives they can be released but not before
