World #1 ladies doubles player American Bethany Mattek-Sands-an Olympic Gold medalist and one of the best liked players on the tour suffered a brutal knee dislocation and lost her chance to win her fourth Grand slam (with Lucie Safarova) in a row. Here is an interview of her opponent who positively looked ill when she saw Bethany's knee

this is a bit tough to watch

hopefully this is not a career ending injury for one of the best people in tennis

On the bright side, her knee injury didn't happen before her first Grand Slam.

her career has been plagued with other injuries. its really sad because many thought she could have achieved the rare feat of holding all four titles at once. what is neat is that her opponent-who doubled (at least) her prize money from the tournament by getting that walkover end to what was a close match-was far more upset about the injury than the fact that she was able to advance another round. Most of the players are that way-I remember when Kim Clijsters went on to win the big title in Cincinnati after former World #1 Ana Ivanovic suffered a broken foot in the semis-Kim spoke to the crowd and noted how awful it was and later a few people saw her fighting back tears in the locker room before her press conference even though she had just won an additional 100K+ for "winning" that match.

That was awful. She was lying on the ground screaming "help me!" for what seemed like an eternity before anyone moved to help.

she did a live update on FB=ruptured tendon etc. sucks it happened to such a nice lady

Why the hell did it take soooooooooooo loooooooong for someone to get out there to help her?????

that's an interesting question and there have been several proposed suggestions including they didn't have a trainer at that court since there were so many courts in action

Not quite as gruesome as the Joe Theisman clip, but likely just as career-endy.

My heart goes out to her.

Yep, I was thinking Theisman too, and also the Anderson Silva MMA leg break not too long ago.

Both were "worse" to watch.

Rules, probably. No one nearby -- the ump, the other player, line judges, ball critters, nor the audience -- would be allowed to assist, most likely. (Though Cirstea did huddle in once the medics got there.)

Still, it's excruciating to watch someone screaming in pain, whatever the rules are. I don't know that I would have been able to just watch while someone else took their time getting there.
