Can someone give me a ‘brief ‘ explanation of the term ‘hashtag.’ I am familiar with the # symbol in front of a phrase. I’m looking for the ‘for dummies’ version. How does it come to be? What is it used for? Can I just put the # symbol in front and fashion one?

It's basically used on social media to highlight the topics you are talking about. Useless outside Twitter, Facebook, Instagram. Not sure about snapchat.

When it comes to the various social media outlets, the hashtag becomes an indexable and referenable term. Example, #FlyEaglesFly happened to be the one used during the last Super Bowl that got the most attention, and it turned into a Twitter counter for how often someone made a post then added that hashtag. Later, people could search on that and see only those in a results feed.
