Bat to a gun fight

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-new...chers-small-baseball-bats-last-resort-n864986

A PA school distract is issuing small 16" bats to teachers as a way to combat the helpless of an active shooter.

For those concerned about kids getting weapons how do you feel about every classroom having a bat in it? Would you like your school to arm teachers with bats? Are they an effective tool to prevent a shooting? Is it a meaningless symbolic gesture (the cya it's all a joke excuse) and waste of taxpayer money?

Whomever thought bringing a bat to a gun fight was a good idea should be fired immediately.

Better than nothing I guess, if they can't get authorized for firearms.

Pepperspray at least has a little bit of reach, though.

Really though, you could view this as a positive development... once it is accepted that an "active defender" is needed, it may be easier to sell the concept of giving those active defenders a more effective means of defense.

I've seen this report online.
How can a small bat stop a culprit shooting a elephant gun at students and staff ?
Imagine the seventh inning stretch were the culprit reloads. I guess when he fires the teacher swings...strike one ! Who do you think will walk ?

Underwriters are balking at insuring schools that utilize armed teachers. Too much lawsuit liability.

In close quarters a hand weapon can often fare better than a firearm. Inside of 21 feet it’s often better to have a knife than a gun

Lets just, for the sake of argument.......go with the smallest caliber usually on the streets....

Louisville Slugger vs. Firearm.......you do the math.

However.....I agree that the baseball bat is an excellent choice when one finds themselves defending against "assault baseballs".

Those bats might be useful to deal with undisciplined thug students. That's about it. (of course, not likely the teacher would have authorization for that)

I i don't know about that. Seems to me that handing out mini baseball bats and pepper spray to a bunch of 5-18 year olds is a recipe for disaster.

Re: Bat to a gun fight

The bucket of rocks idea was better than this.

They dont need to arm teachers. They need to allow teachers to exercise their Constitutional rights.

Re: Bat to a gun fight

Dumb as a bag of doorknobs. In fact, that will be next. Each room issues a bag of doorknobs.

Re: Bat to a gun fight

OK. I guess I read the thing wrong and only teachers will get the bats.

What a total freaking waste. What are they supposed to do, throw it at a shooter? Why not just stock up on cans of soup because that way at least you have a dual purpose weapon.

You are missing the end goal. Give teachers bats to prevent school shootings. A teacher with a bat doesn't stop a shooting. The anti rights side gets to say: "but we armed teachers and it didn't help. We need bans and confiscation now"

The sad part is someone thought this was a good idea and others agreed with it to the point of spending taxpayer money. Those same idiots can't understand why our education system is lacking.

So, these clowns in PA are asking teachers to commit suicide by getting within arm's reach of a person armed with a gun, instead?

Wonder what the teachers and their union reps think about this school district's stupidity? Call back the school board members who are on board with this.

 Basically, that's what they are asking educators to do.
Clowns.

The rest of the developed world laughs at these ideas too. For them the answer is so obvious......gun control

Isn't anybody worried that we are the only Western world Nation that we are not so much worried about if the classrooms are small enough, do the teachers get paid enough, is the school and classroom adequate and capable of teaching our children, what we and our law makers are most "concerned" about is how arm to teachers, and the merits of bats vs gun and how to give cpr to someone who got his/her blown off....

I'm cynical, so I wouldn't be surprised at all if this was actually designed with the real purpose of setting the issue up for debate in PA. That is, to get media/people talking about "a bat against a gunman? Really? What about guns?", that sort of thing.

I wouldn't want teachers are armed either. Squads of armed uniformed guards with rigorous training, fine. But random civilians are an iffy bet. Especially when teachers selected their career because they wanted to help kids grow, not because they wanted to be in a position to be required to shoot people.

You get that most people that carry concealed dont carry because we are required to shoot someone, right? For that matter...we dont alter our lives due to carry. We just live our lives, exercise our Constitutional rights. Hope we never have to use it, but prepared nonetheless..right? In that vein...whats the difference between Mr Jones, the electrician that lives both his professional and private life carrying concealed and no one knows or cares (unless it is needed) or Mr Jones the teacher that does the same thing?

I've been told that if we took a gun away from a criminal he'd just use a knife or a baseball bat. Sounds like the PA school district is taking that NRA talking point at face value.

Um, ok.

That really didn't have much of anything to do with my post, which referred to the idea of requiring teachers to arm themselves and act as security when we could instead just pay for trained professionals.

They will just take the bat and beat her to death with it.

Re: Bat to a gun fight

Imagine what they would take if she is holding a gun

The best thing is to take unruly students and put them in a cage.

There are lot of student that are on their way to prison as it is, so I recommend juvenile authorities put them in special schools and smaller classes and hopefully get them to change their direction.

In California we have abandoned mental health except for the gorked out.
