The "desperate situation" is one of their own doing. They decided to enter the US illegally and try crossing the desert. I don't have much sympathy for them.

If my fellow man had more empathy for me by actually trying to follow our rules to get here, then I would have more empathy. But they don't have empathy for me, so why empathetic toward them.
