I can't stand consumption taxes. I would rather the government take what it needs out of my paycheck and just leave me alone after that. The nice thing about income taxes is they are relative to your income. Thus your taxes are low when you starting out in life, higher as you make more money and are more successful, and then in retirement, they are low again. In contrast, a consumption tax often hits people at their worst. Car engine blows, so you got to go out and get a new car, add in a big sales tax and personal property taxes. You got two kids in daycare and your basement floods, well, that 10,000 dollar furnace and 1200 dollar water heater gets a sales tax added to it, plus a sales tax on the labor to install it.
Then you have seen the rise and fall of common sense.
