This is about the best ‘explainer’ type article I’ve read on the Kavanaugh issue- especially what his behavior in High School was based upon and what is real vs showing off.
I’ve known a lot of these guys in my life, and high school and college was full of these types. They were privileged, awkward kids who used humiliation, often of women, as their currency to be the cool guys. They were often really smart, well spoken and super polite around the adults - and generally seen as model teens. But man... they got away with a boatload of stuff - drinking was huge, drugs were sometimes a big thing - but not for all, and they all did it while pulling straight A’s in AP courses and acing college entrance tests... with a little help from expensive Princeton Review courses and other perks of privilege.
The odd stories about Kavanaugh claiming he was a virgin until well after high school and a hard working nerd completely makes sense... because he very well was both of those things. He wasn’t assaulting women as a sexual outlet - he was doing it purely to impress the guys - his peer group - who all egged each other on and are going to protect each other forever. It’s actually really common, and its clearly written by a guy who understands the psyche.
Some people here on DP understand this psyche well - in fact, at least one is certainly part of a group like this (although probably more of a wannabe than an in- guy), or knows them very, very well. The stuff Kavanaugh did dont necessarily qualify as crimes, but they do suggest bad judgement, and his obvious lies about them suggest an inability to understand issues of simple justice, which is something that would be nice to see in a Supreme Court Justice.
It’s worth a read and a think.
Brett Kavanaugh allegations and male bonding.
