Fox’s Chris Wallace: Trump is ‘Engaged in the Most Direct, Sustained Assault on Freedom of the Press in Our History’

Fox News anchor Chris Wallace called out President Donald Trump’s attacks on the press in a speech at the Newseum in Washington D.C. Friday night. “I believe President Trump is engaged in the most direct, sustained assault on freedom of the press in our history,” Wallace said, speaking at an event honoring the First Amendment. Wallace argued in his speech that “the president’s attacks have done some damage.” “A Freedom Forum Institute poll this year found 29 percent of Americans think the First Amendment goes ‘too far.’ And 77 percent say ‘fake news’ is a serious threat to our democracy,” Wallace said, before touting the “essential truths” of journalism. “Ours is a great profession — maybe the best way to make a living anyone ever came up with. Think of it. We are paid to tell the truth—to cut through all the spin—all the distractions — and tell the American people what is really going on,” he said, citing his reporting exploits, from spending a week with Mother Teresa in Calcutta to challenging Vladimir Putin on the killing of dissidents in Russia.

Wallace also made reference to Trump’s most recent attack on him, which came after the Fox News anchor had a tough interview with Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA). “Sure, we take our share of incoming. A couple of weeks ago, President Trump tweeted after one of my interviews: ‘Steve Scalise blew away the nasty and obnoxious Chris Wallace.’ Afterwards, one of my sons said, ‘Nasty? No. Obnoxious? Well.'” “The bottom line is we’ve seen Presidents come and go,” Wallace said. “We will endure. So will Freedom of the Press. And I am confident — so will the Newseum.”

Bravo Mr. Wallace. With the departure of Shepard Smith, you are the only truthful voice remaining at Fox News.

it's what Mafia like dudes do. they NEVER want people digging around in their laundry.

the PEOPLE on the other hand, need for politicians to be held accountable. Trump attacking the media is just his way of hiding his actions. the guy is low life.

I wonder how long Wallace will last there, they don't like truthful voices on Fox.

Mr. Wallace, who spent the years of 2009-2017 routinely criticizing the Obama Administration at every opportunity, can now be expected to be targeted as a "RINO" and a liar by the far right for refusing to kowtow to Trump.

What's sad is that the free press is allowed to call out politicians for their lies and misdeeds but politicians aren't allowed to call out the free press for their lies and misdeeds. I applaud Trump for calling out the media for their fake news and unfair biased coverage. Trust in the media has been low for several decades now.

That's how the right are now, especially under their new king/dictator. They scream, bully, whine, bitch and moan, like spoiled ignorant children. They like to throw out insults at anyone who disagrees with them, the Trump Party can't handle an opposing opinion, different color or religion....they are all psychotic hypocrites, mainly the weak ones who have not rejected Trump after all his deceptive corruption and anti-American speech and actions.

Trust in politicians should be significantly lower. That people are willing to take Trump's word over anybody else is just wrong.

Then you don't know our history.

:yt

Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity have conditioned these people to go after the media when, you know, they themselves are reporting things like the media and they always protect Fox News while doing so. It's a brilliant loophole and media model. It's just a scam though.

You have a point. If Eric Holder hadn’t investigated James Rosen, tapped his phone and intercepted his emails, the damage to our nation might never have been undone.

Its a defining characteristic of tyrants, and goes way beyond what Hitler called 'Lügenpresse' and Trump calls 'fake news'.

Trump lies casually all the time, and accuses all others of lying. The purpose of this is to eliminate any semblance of an objective truth so the leader can say and do whatever he wants. The only truth becomes the spectacle that the tyrant stars in. And that is Trump to a 'T'.

Trump is America.

And America is Trump.

The great father of the nation, the great leader of the stars and the sun and the moon who gloriously and magically makes all things possible and all things right with righteous justice and great braininess.

All who criticize him, all who speak against him are wrong and just *please pick from the following:

Globalist/Liberal/Never Trumper/Hater/Traitor/Elitist/Establishment/Deep State/Leftist

Polls have shown for decades that public trust in the media is not good. Trump didn't just make it up. He just told the truth when no one else had the courage to speak the truth.

You can thank the ignorant plebe Reagan and his moronic followers who got rid of the fairness doctrine.

Once again, short sighted idiocy on behalf of the traitorous right.

Since the advent of 24 hour news the challenge to the providers has been to fill all 24 of those hours with content. More and more it is politics that fills that void and, over time, various outlets have chosen sides, perhaps at the encouragement of the politicians themselves who really like the idea of having access to a favorable media agency.

The problem is that many president kowtow to the press. Trump doesn't. The press is not use to a president fighting back and I say it is about time.

I wish more presidents had a spine.
