I disagree about that.

Emboldening the open expression could get converts. People who were at a crossroads, toying with the ideas like a 15-year-old who is trying to be shocking -- these people might have put that away after trying it out. By Trump normalizing it, they don't have as much incentive to put it away. They can keep trying it out, and it could be more likely to stick.

It's akin to the recognition Trump gave Kim Jong Un. Giving Kim greater claims to legitimacy, a coup to use at home. Trump is doing for white nationalists what he did for Kim, and white nationalists are gaining power and numbers, where they might otherwise have been experiencing attrition with only the most dedicated bigots seeking out the dark corners where the other rats were hiding.
