I like both. We have both cats and dogs.
Dogs are more useful than cats. They can be trained to do useful work. They bark at strangers, and I can tell when they're "just barking" vs they actually see something alarming. They are more loyal and devoted. A dog is always happy to see you.
Cats are a bit different. They're more independent. If they like you they may well greet you on your return with a snuggle against your ankle, but sometimes they're not in a mood to be bothered. They do their own thing, and while they're happy to interact with you when your intrests converge, they're okay with walking off alone if you don't feel like hunting mice today.
Dogs are more slave-like. That makes them useful, but I kind of feel it makes them less individuals.
All cats are emphatically individuals. They're more like friends than pets: you hang out sometimes, but you also part and do your own things too. As long as you're having fun together they're cool with it, but they won't tolerate being annoyed, ignored, or mistreated for too long. In a sense, they're more like "real people" than dogs. They'll be your friend but they won't put up with your ****.
In a survival situation I'd much rather have a dog, because of their utility. Otherwise, I prefer the independent personality of cats.
Then there are times I could cheerfully kill the lot of them, when the dogs have strewn trash across the yard and the cats have clawed the last roll of toilet paper to shreds....
