Do you still have a landline?

Can you use Vonage with all your regular plugged-in phones? Or does it work differently?

Yes. You plug your regular phone into the Vonage device. The Vonage device is then plugs into your router. Easy peasie!

People still use fax?? I mean, take a look at some of the fax applications on the smart phone. You can 'fax' a file over using the application, and a file on the phone rather than use a fax machine.

The at&t wireless base will route the 911 calls based on the 'automatic location'

https://www.att.com/media/att/2012/support/pdf/Quick_Start_guide.pdf

You can port your current number to the wireless base, pay like 20 bucks a month, and it should still support 911. It has battery backup, so if the electric goes out, you can still use it (I think a few hours of talking, and several days in standby mode), It has two phone jackes, so you can put in a wireless base for a bunch of wireless stations, and one of those wired phones for when the electric is out.

Yep, people still use fax for some reason. Our 3rd party risk management company requires us to fax in our new certificates of insurance.

The places that I work with will accept scan/email

I was going to cut back long distance, caller ID, etc, but it was still going to cost me $62 a month. I think that they charge based on location. I can't understand why I am paying so much and am bundled with internet.

The $40/month with my Vonage service includes unlimited long distance. When I signed up for it 4 years ago I ported over my number from Comcast.

See, I think that's still too much. I don't need unlimited long distance. I have unlimited talk, text and data on my phone.

Yep, that would work great. I do have fax/email service where I can email a scanned item to any fax machine. Any fax machine will connect with my efax service except for one - and you guessed it - that risk management company!

comcast would charge you 15 bucks for the same.

Where I live now, Comcast isn't available, and I doubt they'd charge me $15/mo without bundling it with cable. I don't have or want cable - unlike you, I don't hang on every word that comes out of Sean Hannity's mouth :)

My antenna brings in about 30 channels pretty well. If there's a game I want to watch on ESPN I just go to a local tav.

Well, then there ya go! Sounds like you really don't need a landline. If you're worried about losing touch with folks that only have your landline number I'm pretty sure there's a solution "out there" that will, for a small fee forward all calls made to your former land line# to your cell.

I miss my landline like I miss a real bad toothache.

I may look into that. Thanks!

No landline. VoIP and cell. I use the VoIP so little I really should ditch it. Can't remember the last time I even gave someone that number.

Yeah... Ooma.. $4 a month.

I seldom use it though. But for only $4 I keep it, I give the number to people/stores that I KNOW will robocall/telemarketers me.. It's easier to block numbers on that than my cell phone.

Sean hannity? huh? I fail to see the connection.

If we want to watch a game, we do it on the 90" big screen in my own bar in our 3500sq ft man cave! :pimpdaddy:

I looked at Ooma but it had a few hundred dollar start-up cost, and the place that I read about it warned that Ooma might raise its prices, and you'd be stuck with a $200 or $300 brick if you decided to walk away from it over rising prices. Thanks!

What's gross about using a "Magic Jack" is where they want you to put the plug!
So thaaaats what that bottle of lube is all about.

Sorry, homie, my folks were poor, I'm self educated...lol... I know now, though, so there's that. (Read: mad shook and seeking validation after your unwashed peasant comment)

...I'm gonna be honest with you, that meme is literally the only reason I ever found out about the guy. I know nothing about him besides his dying from laughter and being a Greek philosopher.

I paid about $100 for Ooma 'Telo' box.. Obviously you need a good, fast Internet. But the 'box' is about 100 bucks...

And the basic service is free. The $4 I pay is taxes and local and state telephone 'fees'. Ooma does have a $10 a month plan, and a I 'think' a $20 plan with all sorts of bells and whistles. Things like an App to make calls from your cell phone using your Ooma number, etc., etc., and a bunch of other nonsense. I just want a phone to make calls and receive calls for the telemarketers and like that. I don't need all the other stuff. So the $4 a month is worth it.

I don't hang on every word of Sean Hannity's, but I do want cable. Up until very recent years, where I live you couldn't get even the one local channel (now we have two!) without cable, not even in town.

Yeah I'm not ready to "cut the cable cord" yet.

Wow, that sounds exactly like Vonage but at 10% of the price- good tip - thanks!
