Dick Dale, 81, king of the surf guitar, dies.

HUGE influence on a lot of acts. Dick Dale was a treasure.

Dick is surfin' with the Big Kahuna now, searching for the Universe's most outrageous wave, with a bikini babe on each arm, and bottle of Jack in his right hand. RIP Dick. May all your waves be a perpetual pipeline.

Dick Dale was 81. I thought I kept current with the music of the late 1950’s and up. Why do I draw a blank on this guy?

Dale’s last album was in the mid 60s, i think (until the 90s).

He’s a similar guy to Link Wray, who was a pioneer in his own right in a similar way.

Weirdly, Link Wray and Dick Dale had never met, and didnt really listen to each other’s music.

Here’s Wrays biggest hit... it has the distinction of being the only instrumental banned from radio.

I love love love love Dick Dale's music. He is truly the king of instrumental surf music. I was lucky enough to see him a couple of years ago in a small venue. It was amazing that he could perform at all given all his health issues. I'm so glad I saw him before he died. He embodied the true spirit of rock and roll. He is a legend of guitar. RIP.
