Dennis Prager wants to say the N-word

Prager isn't the kind of guy who use the N word to hurt people's feelings. He'd use it in an academic sense to discuss various aspects of the word.

There is a point to be made that the situation we find ourselves in w/ regard to "the n-word" is a ridiculous situation that never should've happened.
Our culture and our history is what it is, though.
As ludicrous as it is to have words we won't use, it'd be just ludicrous to ignore the context of language.
Human language and human culture are deeply intertwined.

But all the same, no matter how self-explanatory the reasons we find ourselves in this weird situation, no matter how obviously inevitable in hindsight we find this weird situation, it's still a weird situation.

I suspect on a day farther removed from our social and historical context, people will find the controversy quaint.
But, for us today, the issue is still sorta visceral.
 
The N word was made up so people could pretend that blacks were not human and therefore could be kept as slaves. There are many examples of words made up to dehumanize others, usually as a result of warfare. We all know what those words are, so there is no need to repeat them here.

So, why is the "N word" worse than all of the other words that were made up to pretend it was OK to kill certain people because they really weren't really human beings like us?

Is it any worse than those other words?

The N word was made up so people could pretend that blacks were not human and therefore could be kept as slaves. There are many examples of words made up to dehumanize others, usually as a result of warfare. We all know what those words are, so there is no need to repeat them here.

So, why is the "N word" worse than all of the other words that were made up to pretend it was OK to kill certain people because they really weren't really human beings like us?

Few today understand that FDR was disgusted by them too.

He has the right to say the word. He does not have the right to say the word and have nobody criticize him for it, no employer fire him for it, or anything else. He only has the right against the government punishing him for saying it.
 
Some people say that word only when they lose self-control. They are then immediately ashamed of themselves. And thankful that there were no repercussions.

Several years ago, I saw a Caucasian man start to cross the street in a crosswalk. He had to suddenly stop because a car rolled into the crosswalk without stopping to let him cross. He yelled, "Are you crazy?!"

The car took off. The man then crossed the street and passed me on the sidewalk in a quiet residential area. He looked back at the now empty scene of the crime and said that word loud enough for me to hear.

I have no doubt that some people who consider themselves to be racially color blind have occasionally done the same, only to immediately repent.

Really? No need at all? ;) Then I shall spell some out for us gratuitously, like nigger, negro, wop, wet back, spic, and dago. I love those words. Very powerful to use especially in person. :cool: Now days most people just look at me like I have three heads when I say them, they are in shock that, I, your typical well browned Caucasian/ Mutt would use them freely and willy nilly, all because I can. I recommend saying these kinds of words with a smile and cheerfully to get the complete discombobulated effect. Its entertaining and educational what's not to like?

Nigger is originally defined as a synonym of negro in Spanish or Portuguese which was defined as black with the latin root niger.

Sums up Trump supporters perfectly. Racist, bigoted people who are mad that minorities have rights, gays have rights, and that they can't go around berating, beating and discriminating against minorities anymore. Those folks? Or perhaps are you only talking about those who bought, kept and bred them after the fact (which included black folks as well)?

It was not made up specifically to dehumanize the already dehumanized "slave". The root meaning of the word is in the color black of which they referred to the black slaves as.
And they were not pretending at the time. They actually thought of them as lesser beings, inhuman, etc...

Probably because that dehumanization had the power of the state behind it, and in some ways, still does.

There is a reason why few understand it. It doesn't exist. FDR named Hugo Black to the Supreme Court, a former Klansman, mind you. And he becomes, quite possibly the strongest defender of civil rights in the history of the Supreme Court. And LBJ finishes Reconstruction by passing civil rights, voting rights and housing rights laws.

They had a funny way of showing that they didn't care for Blacks.
