Senate Democrats on Monday refused to participate in a phone call with Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh over an allegation that he attempted to sexually assault a girl at a party during high school, and instead insisted that the FBI is needed to investigate the claim.

The Judiciary Committee’s top Democrat, Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California, said Democrats “will not participate” in the phone call with Kavanaugh that's scheduled with Senate Judiciary Committee staff at 5:30 p.m.

“In view of the enormity and seriousness of these allegations, a staff-only phone call behind closed doors is unacceptable and Democratic staff will not participate.” Feinstein said in a statement Monday afternoon. “This isn’t how things should be done and is in complete violation of how this committee has worked in the past."

Hard to dispute the OP, concerning where we'are at now. But this event was done in a troubling fashion. Leaking the accusatory July letter this late in the game, is extremely problematic in my opinion.

Even more troubling, is the excuse given for the timing:

Everyone is jockeying for position on this, disgusting is not good enough of a word to cover it.

Republicans are seemingly doing all they can to push this through knowing the midterms might not be so kind to them, Democrats are using this to delay this until after the midterms in hopes the next Congress flips to their control.

In the meantime we have every indication that this story should be heard, even though the timing suggests Democrats were far more about scheming than this woman's story.

my understanding is the redacted information was available to the committee members prior to the hearing. if that is correct, why did no one question the nominee about the accusation during those hearings

let me affirm i am no kavanaugh supporter; in listening to his responses during the hearings, i found him to be without all of the gifts i would expect a SC justice to possess. but that limited skill set does not excuse the committee members from broaching the question about the accuser IF they indeed possessed the redacted letter

This is not true, Politico didn't contact all 65 and of those contacted only 5 responded.

I'm still trying to figure out HOW in the world this is anywhere within the jurisdiction of the FBI?

It's a 30+ year old case, outside of the statue of limitations for legal action, that occurred in Maryland and doesn't involve any federal laws?

Is there some subset of federal law I am unaware that the FBI has jurisdiction in investigating any potential crime at any given time for an individual up for public nomination?
