Democrat O'Rourke presidential bid draws $6.1 million in first 24 hours | Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Beto O’Rourke raised more than $6.1 million within 24 hours of announcing his candidacy for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, his campaign said on Monday, highlighting his fundraising prowess in a crowded field.

The former three-term Texas congressman’s haul put him at the top of a Democratic pack of more than a dozen candidates so far including Bernie Sanders, the independent U.S. senator who sought the party’s nomination in 2016. Sanders raised $5.9 million in the first 24 hours of his 2020 campaign.

From what I've seen of him on cable TV, O'Rourke reminds me somewhat of John Kennedy. He has more charisma that the other contenders even though his answers to questions on policy positions are still weak on substance.

Beta O'Rourke is very little chance. He gets kicked in the balls by Ted Cruz... imagine how he will do against a more... competent opponent.

Trump is a 'more competent' opponent? We'll see how the country feels after four years of 'no collusion.'

That is a hell of a lot of money. Good for him. Wow.

The amount of money that flows through the Parties and Candidates for the Presidential Election (and Congressional as well) is absolutely disgusting.

Actually...Beto did surprisingly well against Cruz considering how red Texas is and continues to be...Cruz should have won in a landslide but he didn't so I wouldn't exactly say Beto got kicked in the balls by Cruz. In fact...Cruz came way too close to losing to a D and that speaks volumes as to how disliked Cruz truly is.

That is small potatoes compared to what Bidens campaign will bring in once he is all in.

Run Joe run!! Your country needs you !!

Cruz is not disliked. He is playing a character, like Borat.

Cruz is a sell out, and personally a disgusting human being.

Texas has become a purple state given the relative birth rates of Latinos vs. Anglos. Anything goes now in TX.

He's a rich white man. I dont see democrats nominating him in this PC era.

Biden is a old rich white man who likes to grope women. I dont see democrats nominating him in this PC era.

I'd say no chance, but the DNC will have its finger on the scale.

Well the GOP elected a man that exactly fits your description. The bar has already been set low with Trump, why should it be an issue.

i don't know a lot about him yet. there is one issue that matters to me the most, and that's winning the election and getting Trump and Pence out of government. whoever can do that will have my vote.

Advertising isn't free.

To be fair, Trump DID beat Cruz in the republican primary, in 2016.

Although that may have been down to his staff more than himself, I dunno.

Because its the GOP. They dont have a thing against being white or rich or old. The democrats have specifically drawn a line saying they are the party of diversity, youth, political correctness, the 99%. Everything that Biden isnt. The groping is more of an issue with Biden because its children. Trump only groped hookers that we know of.

Texas has a long ways to go before anyone can claim it to be purple or risking a blue turn. The assumption that latinos are all dems is a false narative...the majority are actually catholic and pro-life - think about it!

Comparing him to Kennedy? You have got to be kidding. O'Rourke is more style than substance, and has virtually no experience, and was embarrassed in the Texas Senate debates. Not to mention, he lost, despite out-organizing and out-spending his opponent. He has six years as congressman - two of which were running for senate. (Contrast that to Kennedy's four as a naval officer, six as a congressman, and eight as a senator). O'Rourke isn't going to withstand the primary.

Until we can get money drastically limited or removed entirely, and elections publicly funded, that is the land the war will be fought on.

I'd want more details on his fundraising before I compared him to Sanders.

While the 1st-day fundraising is good, can he sustain the level of fundraising that Sanders can?

And will it be from the same broad base of small donations, or a narrower one which includes larger donations?
