Notorious sniper who terrorized the nation's capital region in 2002 divides Supreme Court 17 years later

The Supreme Court is going to decide if the DC sniper should have his case retried. He is currently serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
IMO he should have his case retried, be found guilty, and receive a life sentence with the possibility of parole. Each time he gets a parole hearing it should be denied and never let that awful man out of jail. He deserves to spend the rest of his life behind bars a die in jail. However I do agree he should be given chance to plead hi case of being reformed to a parole board that should never grant it.

I remember that whole thing, and his role in it. IMO he should have his case retried, but only if they include the possibility of the death penalty. Then he can decide how innocent he thinks he is before going ahead with it.

He's not innocent, but he was 17 at the time. He was not a mature adult. I think he should have a chance to reform and return to society.
 
I also remember his case and the terror the extended Metro DC area went through.

17? Old enough to know better, that's for sure. And, were it up to me to decide, definitely old enough to be "tried" as an adult. With all the penalties attached thereto. Including the DP in VA.

Better to let sleeping dogs lie. He's locked away for the rest of his earthly life. Even if it is on the taxpayer's dime.

And you have what evidence that the brainwashing has been undone? Would you take personal responsibility letting him out if he kills again?
 
Ten families lost a member forever. Totally disrupting their lives that will always have that pain.

Yeah, life in prison is tough.

He should never set foot outside that prison.

Punishment is not justice. Public security (incarceration) and individual redemption (rehabilitation) are justice.

Replacing something that is justice (redemption) with something that's not (punishment) would be going backwards as a society.

Maybe we need to take a step back and talk about what justice means. Justice is what justifies the existence of society. Justice is what makes society worth being a part of. Punishment does not justify the existence of society. Public safety and individual redemption justify the existence of society. We don't really seek justice for an individual. We seek justice to rectify a situation. When we say "justice for Joe", we don't mean we owe Joe. We mean we need to justify the existence of society in addressing Joe's situation.

No way. In addition to his sniper shots he carried out multiple armed robberies and shot folks during those. This was not a case of a mandatory life sentence for a minor (which has been ruled against) - this was what a jury decided that he deserved for multiple felony convictions.
