Crime in Dallas County is fixin' to plummet!

Mostly because the new DA won't be prosecuting most crimes.

DA Creuzot letter to the people of Dallas County

Misdemeanor possession of weed? Won't be prosecuted.
Flipping Xanax on the corner? No jail until it comes back from testing and then you get a ticket instead of a warrant.
Homeless sleeping in front of your business? Too bad for you! It's "inhumane" to run them off.
That homeless person sleeping in front of your store just stole 20 cases of beer? Nobody's going to prosecute that because theft of personal items less than $750 is now legal in Dallas County. Well, it's not really legal but nobody is going to prosecute it.
Is your license suspended? Feel free to drive. Nobody is going to prosecute stuff like that.
Are you looking at probation? Don't sweat it. Nobody is going to ask for anything significant. Your lower level felonies won't get more than 6 months probation.
Do you need to come up with bail? Not in Dallas County! Low level felons with no convictions in the last 5 years are to be released on their own recognizance.

Good luck, Dallas County! Something tells me you're going to need it.

I have a feeling that the population of Collin County is about to increase.

It already is, but it has nothing to do with this, not will it

Each should be arrested and charged equally. Thats what im advocating for. If you don't want pot holders to be charged then you need your politicians to make that change in the law. Not police and DAs deciding what laws they will or will not enforce.

Frankly, I don't believe that anyone should be charged for low level drug crimes, but my opinion doesn't matter much. What does matter is that in reality each are not arrested and charged equally. It's an often corrupt system, with people making completely arbitrary decisions. GIVEN that state of affairs, I much prefer to standardize the policies, and have them apply to everyone, rich, poor, influential, a nobody, etc.

In this case the DA does have the discretion, he ran on doing this and was elected TO DO what he promised. As I keep saying, these little experiments are fantastic IMO. Much better to try it in Dallas County, see the results, see what works, what failed, before even state much less federal laws are changed with no data, no evidence, on the likely outcomes.

Like I said, if it's your property, you're within your rights to resort to elevated means to inspire them to leave.
What's wrong with you people, you live IN Texas and one of the few good things about that state is the fact that you actually have the right to shoot bad guys if they're committing a crime on your property.

Besides, that will get the cops to your address very quickly, and they'll probably thank you for taking out the trash.

Trash? Explain, please.

Low level drugs, I agree. Not so sure how well loitering in front of businesses will turn out. Some of the folks don't just sit there politely. Put yourself in the shoes of owner or customer.
In a perfect world, none of our fellow citizens would be homeless, but alas...a compromise should be found.

I'll just say that I agree that the police and DA and the public all need to work together on all this.

I assume that someone willing to take away my ability to earn a living would also be willing to shoot me to do it - so I would "steal" that opportunity from them without hesitation.
I can very much respect that.

With all the churches (especially those megachurches) - and good Christian hearts - in Dallas County, there should be plenty of resources to help the poor so they aren't breaking the law to survive.

It ain't even those dirty hippies in Austin, either. It is Dallas Freaking Country!

Yeah, that amazing. I originally figured it was Austin, when I first saw the headline; but no!

But let's not forget:

Alabama now has a post-Southern-Strategy Dem Senator.

Who'd have thunk it?

The Democratic prosecutor told the elected governor and legislature "F U! I'm the pure socialist dictator of Dallas County!" announcing that anyone can steal anything they want from any store provided they do not steal more than $750 worth each time. What better way for him to outlaw capitalism and retaliate against every business in Dallas Country.

Hungry? No problem. All restaurants are free. Everything is free. Just take it. The Democratic socialist prosecutor is running cover for you.

Really they should eliminate the oath of office for DAs since he knowingly, willfully and deliberately is violating his oath of office - and all legislators and the governor should be fired since they are irrelevant. Rather, each local prosecutor is the total dictator of his county, the perfect thug with a gun and hundreds of thugs with badges in his employment.

Loitering is beneficial to allow better selection as to who to rob. But be careful not to rob anyone of more than $750. Preventing loitering would interfere with the DA's goals of promoting theft and robbery as part of his declaring Dallas County is now near purely socialistic.

Right, thugs who don't prosecute low level criminals, which are the scariest kind of thugs out there, the ones who are transparent, treat every violator the same, as opposed to handing out passes to the rich and powerful and throwing the book at the poor.

Anyway, DAs and cops simply DO have the discretion to do what they're doing. It's no different in theory than the Obama and TRUMP DoJ using their discretion to NOT swarm into Colorado and other states and shutting down all those pot stores. So should we disband the federal government because TRUMP is allowing pot sales to go forward, despite federal laws prohibiting those sales? Should we eliminate the oath of office for President since he knowingly, willfully and deliberately is violating his oath, same as the FBI, DEA, etc.?

Reading the actual letter and your 'summation' is like two different worlds.... :doh

You used to be better.... :peace

I do think either the federal law on pot should be changed or it should be enforced. Otherwise it means selective enforcement. The ONLY thing that makes laws legitimate is if they are universally enforced. Otherwise they are just political and personal weapons the government uses against people someone in government doesn't like. Why is the government arresting pot smugglers with long prison terms, while doing nothing to pot shops that many of which have much more?

In this instance, though, it is more than that. The District Attorney has literally entered into a mass conspiracy with thieves against businesses that should be able to rely upon the law protecting them and their businesses were started when theft was criminally illegal. These CRIMES by the Democrat District Attorney are against every victim of theft under $750.

But you're missing the point of announcing NO minor pot crimes will be prosecuted. By doing it, the DA removes the possibility of prosecutors or cops targeting people they don't like. It's completely transparent and addresses that issue head on.

As to the feds, maybe I've missed you calling for Trump's head over willfully ignoring pot laws in the states that have legalized it, but my point was simply that exercising this kind of discretion is in fact part of our system, common, happens every minute of every day without controversy.

I'm not going to defend the $750 theft provision, but the proposed policy as written is very narrow. It only applies to theft of essentials, by people who aren't trying to make money - i.e. they're doing it for survival.

Theft of Necessary Items
Study after study shows that when we arrest, jail, and convict people for non-violent crimes
committed out of necessity, we only prevent that person from gaining the stability necessary to
lead a law-abiding life. Criminalizing poverty is counter-productive for our community’s
health and safety. For that reason, this office will not prosecute theft of personal items less than
$750 unless the evidence shows that the alleged theft was for economic gain.

For starters I'd like to see the research. I'd also like a better understanding of how they draw a line between "necessity" and "for economic gain."

What is the purpose of this? I think I'll do all my shopping in Dallas County from now on. Really stupid legislation.
