He renounced and apologized for his segregationist past, and was re-elected in the early 80's with the help of foregiving African-American voters. Actually, it has many meanings...the main one is a racist slur directed at the Irish. It has been suggested that Byrd used the term, albeit a poor choice of words, to tell blacks that they weren't the only poor people in this country.

The only people that voted for Byrd were his constituents in W. Virginia. The political history of W. Virginia seems to be one of flipping parties everytime the economy sours.


As a side, while reading Byrds biography I learned that when he was a boy, his mother died of the 1918 influenza. He was then sent to W. Virginia to be raised by his uncle who had ties to the Klan. Which just goes to show how a pandemic can change the course of lives and the world.
