(CNN) Sen. Cory Booker announced Monday that he will end his campaign after failing to qualify for the Democratic debate planned for Tuesday in Iowa.

"It was a difficult decision to make, but I got in this race to win, and I've always said I wouldn't continue if there was no longer a path to victory," Booker said in an email to supporters Monday.

The New Jersey Democrat's announcement came a day before six presidential candidates will participate in the CNN/Des Moines Register's debate in Des Moines, Iowa. He did not qualify for the event. It also came as the Senate gears up for the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump.

"Our campaign has reached the point where we need more money to scale up and continue building a campaign that can win -- money we don't have, and money that is harder to raise because I won't be on the next debate stage and because the urgent business of impeachment will rightly be keeping me in Washington," Booker wrote.

His announcement marks another departure of a high-profile black candidate from the 2020 race. After not making the December debate, Booker criticized the rules that kept him from qualifying for the event and was outspoken about the growing lack of diversity on stage.

Which is a damn shame since I think he is someone that eventually everyone (progressive, liberal, Independent, centrist, right-of-center) could have rallied around. And yet people like Tom Steyer made the debate stage for Tuesday and he didn't

One has to admit that Andrew Yang’s response about racism was an incredibly cutting and poignant explanation for why it can be so hard for minority candidates to prevail in Presidential contests:

"But black(s) and Latinos have something much more powerful working against them than words -- they have numbers," he continued. He called attention to the disparity of the net worths of white households compared with black and Latino households.

"And the question is," Yang said, "Why am I the lone candidate of color on this stage?"

He then pivoted to a main focus of his political platform: the idea of a universal basic income. Yang said a low percentage of Americans donate to political campaigns, and added: "You know what you need to donate to political campaigns? Disposable income."

Booker was going nowhere fast. Good decision on his part. He acquitted himself well and should stand proud of his effort.

I agree, but I hope that he gets looked at seriously when the eventual nominee is chosen as a potential running mate.

Complete insanity on display. He's a nice guy, but he's whacked out.

Me too. He has nothing to offer.

I had really never considered the point about disposable income until Yang brought it up, and it really does make sense as to why candidates like Harris and Booker can't get the support/money they need to maintain a campaign. While I dont really support Yang's candidacy, he does make a lot of really good points in a way that make sense to a lot of Americans

Bound to happen, Booker was stalling out.

In key states coming up early in the primary season, and even with others dropping out before him, his support was not enough. We can blame various factors like his persistent need to view things through the confines of race alone but in the end he was not a good candidate, and the base responded as such.

I’m not so sure. Its an idea that might make sense for campaigns which are just getting off the ground, but it doesn’t explain the inability of either Harris or Booker to meet polling and fundraising requirements 11 months and 5 debates after they announced.

You're probably right, I may just be a little biased since I personally liked the guy. In all honesty, I cannot think of a single thing or moment that he tried to campaign for which might explain why he didnt get any traction. Gotta run FOR something I guess...

I think it largely boils down to how badly you want it. Both Harris and Booker cited lack of financial support to continue their candidacy, but even the Clintons went into considerable debt to finance their campaigns over the years. Neither Harris or Booker are willing to have a significant personal financial stake in their own campaigns so I have to conclude they lack commitment.

Not a fan of Booker, but also don’t have much against him. Just not a candidate I’d willingly support. And while the ethnic identity of a candidate can deliver the message that they identify with the struggles of their community, often it doesn’t. There’s a reason Sanders had twice the black support of Kamala Harris, for example. The message is more important than the messenger. The messenger is only so important as their willingness to fight for the message.

Conservatives are huge fans of sticking a minority in front of a corrupt and/or racist message. Progressives need to be better than that. Obama offered hope but didn’t deliver significant change.

Virtually anyone would be better than that orange sack of **** we currently have.

Notable is that as messed up as a country Iran is, once their leader was discovered lying to them they are in the streets demanding his resignation.

While here in the US when our leader is caught lying his faithful just dismiss it as Fake News.

There are a lot of people still in it who don't really have a chance. Booker was one of them. I like Booker, I think he was one of the better candidates, but at this stage his chances are about equal to mine. I hope he puts whatever resources he has left, including endorsing whoever the dem nominee is, into ridding our country of the orange **** stain currently infecting us. I also hope he uses the recognition he has gained and builds momentum for the future. He is a young guy (relatively speaking) and I hope he has a long future.

Spartacus Booker is another leftist moron.

Now Booker gets to go home to Rosario Dawson's titties, and all of the incels on this forum get to pretend he's the REAL loser here, while they hide from their managers and post on their off time.

One has to admit that Andrew Yang’s response about racism was an incredibly cutting and poignant explanation for why it can be so hard for minority candidates to prevail in Presidential contests:

He's claiming that there are no blacks or Latinos on the stage because blacks and Latinos have lower disposable incomes than whites. Presumably if they had an extra 1k in welfare per month, then they would make donations only to people who are of the same race as them, and then we would see more minorities on the Democratic stage.

What an insult to assume some people will only support those of their own race, which is what Yang is saying.

They cited fundraising issues - but the fundraising issues were also related to a lack of popular support. Booker just doesn't have a lot of name recognition nationally, and what he has isn't all positive. His "I am Spartacus!" comments didn't help. On my personal yardstick - I never considered him qualified anyway - a little over a term as Senator and being a mayor of a small city doesn't prepare someone to be president.

I think it was time, he acquitted himself well for what he had to work with. Since he's in a safe seat, he's positioned himself nicely for a potential future presidential appointment.

A well thought out, intelligent post. Good job. :applaud

He just doesn't mean all that much to me to put much effort in using additional prose.
