Coronavirus, coming to a restaurant near you

Despite my observations, it didn't stop me from my weekend dim sim fixes!

Because I've seen the inside of American kitchens, too! :2razz:

There is a small strip mall Chinese take out in our burg. Maybe thirty feet wide and a hundred feet deep. I was picking up an order one day a few years ago and someone opened the front door at the same time that someone was coming or going through the back door. The mini-hurricane upset an entire stack of styrofoam clam type dinner containers on to the floor. As the young man was stooping to pick up the containers, our eyes met and I knew instantly that the containers would be restocked just as soon as I left.......

The Trump admin is lying because the DOW is in partial economic meltdown. We have lost 8+ months of gains within a single week and it continues to decline. I don't exactly blame them for trying to manage public fear in this way, even though American economic fundamentals are still strong. It's all perceptual.

Then you have the mass media inciting utter panic and terror because they are privately owned and their billionaire owners are hoping to make a buck on the declining stock market.

Somewhere in the midst of all this is the truth of the virus, if it's a real threat, etc. For that, I would pay the most attention to what the WHO is saying. Our domestic information sources have too many agendas.

Exactly. I have been following WHO and governement sites in a few European countries.

There is no way I trust VP Pence, and the CDC is clearly being pressured to be political. Yesterday's press briefing was clumsy. Pence didn't have and/or didn't understand the information and answers requested by the Press. To his credit he threw the ball to experts who for the most part were following a WH directed presentation guideline: "You must remember to give the President credit for directing you, promising you whatever you need, and credit him for his great leadership in responding to the crisis. Everything is fine, threat is low, no worries. REMEMBER! CREDIT THE PRESIDENT. DO NOT CONTRADICT THE WHITE HOUSE."

Still, ironically there was little mention of testing for community spread. I'm guessing because testing kits are in very short supply. Doctors are reportedly not getting clear and complete information from CDC and other government agencies.

It was like watching to a press conference in North Korea where Dear Leader must receive credit again and again for all the wonderful achievements (that largely never happen).

Following the less than informative Pence monitored presser, "Everything is fine. Americans are at very low risk", we discover that the Defence Intelligence Agency flipped a middle finger to all that happy talk from Pence and restricted DIA staff travel including domestic.

Also, following Pence's paltry prognostications we discover that the EU raised the virus threat level to high.

And today we are reading headlines about the US dropping the ball early in the virus response efforts. Naaaa, how could that be possible? America drop the ball? I'm shocked. Shocked, I tell you!

How two uniquely American issues could make the coronavirus worse

With the absence of paid sick leave for most low-level restaurant workers including those who do food preparation, it is guaranteed that people with the coronavirus will come to work and will be sneezing and coughing on your food. Another problem is that these workers often lack health insurance or are under-insured with plans that have large deductibles, so they are not likely to go see a doctor and get tested.

Do you want a side of coronavirus with your steak?

Very good point, and all the more reason to vote for Bernie.

No, the cost of your steak won't double, it will go up some, but not as much as you would think.

Why are people so concerned about this virus? Do you know how many people have died of the flu this season? Coronavirus is a small fraction of the flu...

The biggest threat is the threat itself. It’s not quite a cold, and not quite a flu. We can stack it’s effect on top of those who get the flu, and we can worry that if it mutates into more of a cold and less if a flu, we can’t immunize against it.

The most worrisome effects are that it may affect the ability of America to get it’s work done whether it’s in a factory, a school, or in a uniform. We need butts in the pews so to speak.

Meanwhile our hated pharma industry is hot on the trail of a cure and an immunization. There is at least one apparently effective one being field tested.

Not specific to Chinese restaurants, I'm sure! And things like this, along with that mentioned in this thread, are why I believe restaurants will be prime spreaders of the disease.

If the coronavirus can reinfect someone who has already had it and recovered, that means that the antibodies the body develops to fight it don't work a second time. If this is the case, how can a vaccine work?

Yes, this makes it harder to make effective vaccines. It's likely to be due to some subtle mutations.

There are a few possibilities. One, best case, is that not enough or strong enough antibodies built up on first exposure. They may build up over time and/or may develop more after re-exposure or re-infection.
