My chances of getting the common flue and dying in America at the moment are 100 times greater than dying from coronavirus.

Yes, you keep telling yourself that marke-and keep going to church and mixing with hundreds of potentially infected people. That's the sensible thing to do, right, because 'god' will save you?

At this moment, yes it is.

The government is trying to keep it that way.

Covid 19 is ten times or so more deadly than the flu. The elderly and people who are already sick seem to have a very high risk from it. With death rates in Italy for the elderly being above 10%

Given that churches tend to have a high % of elderly attendees, going to church could see a large number of deaths as a result

Or old people could catch the traditional flue and die from it, which is 10 times more likely. We have never banned church services before because of influenza risks. I don't like the way the world is headed towards disaster through one uncontrollable paranoia or another.

I'm sure he doesn't have older or susceptible people in his congregation.

Its not about irrational fears its about slowing the progress of the virus to keep our healthcare system from being overwhelmed while a treatment and or vaccine is developed.

There was a rush to develop a swine flue vaccine as that virus unfolded years ago, but then people started dying from the vaccine as well. It seems humans cannot put a stop to sickness and death no matter what. There is no point in devastating the civilized landscape over fears of getting sick and dying. We might as well calm down and handle this epidemic like we did the swine flue.

If this event has opened my eyes to anything it's why in the hell are so many people dying from the flu? Are all these people on their death beds?

I know some of those churches and am not surprised they closed either out of fear or duty to human ordinance. Our church is not like that. My son goes to a different church in our town and it has a larger congregation, well over 100 members, and it did not close either.

Maybe I should give up trying to avoid infection since the democrats overruled Trump's ban on travel into our country from China?

For unbelievers who want to believe in evolution instead of God I like to blame the failures of natural selection and evolution for the disaster of sickness and death. You would think those natural forces could have prevented the introduction of sickness and death if they were sharp enough to invent life. But natural selection refuses to admit the fact of Adam's sin and the tragedy sin has brought on God's creation, leaving it without any logical explanation for the troubles.

There has been no vote on this yet. The situation is changing hourly and I very much doubt that a vote to repeal will happen.

This is NOTHING like influenza for which there is already an effective vaccine. Use your head!

So your church is stupid and, let me guess, is relying on prayers to a 'god' to keep you well? Do you not understand that the more contact you have with others, the greater the possibility that you'll contract a killer virus? EVERY guideline from MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS states that social distancing is the ONLY realistic preventative measure available, along with observing scrupulous personal hygiene. If you want to risk your life, be my guest. It isn't my problem.

The oldest couple in our church are in their 90s. They were both there yesterday.

then you do have older/susceptible people in your congregation (and those that go home to the same).

congrats on your church's strategy.

i ask a question about the flu and get this.

anyone surprised?

He seems not to understand natural selection and endows a natural force with some sort of intent and intelligence.

I am from the South and am used to this kind of misunderstanding of science though.

hang on.

are you saying what he posted was a lie? something that's against Christian doctrine?

Your 'god' is ignoring you. Your imaginary 'god' doesn't give a damn about you. Your ignorance about science is epic in its proportions.

i think they're being stubborn to prove a political point.

some people will die across the country due to that stubbornness.

i grew up in the church as well. lived in the South my whole life. people like him are a dime a dozen around me.

Hysteria, no. Sensible precautions; absolutely. The more people you mix with, the more chance you have of being infected, and vice versa. I suggest you get yourself tested, because your 'god' won't help you, no matter how hard you pray. In a couple of weeks all mass gatherings, including church services, will be banned. Ignore the warnings from the people who know about these things at your peril.

Here in this EXCEPTIONAL country, our Made Great Again Government has seen to it that there are no testing kits to be had.

Thankfully that is slowly changing, but our Big Pharma led fascist government makes us 3 weeks behind the power curve.

Medicine for profit and greedy leaders in government have raised hell with the public health situation.

One of the weirder ones was I was in bible study with a mechanical engineer that was having trouble with a projector and started going on about how the devil doesn't want this to happen ... then I moved the books away from the exhaust vent...

Sometimes deterministic forces are just ... deterministic forces

Some people will destroy the entire economy due to irrational fears about the weather or about influenza viruses.

It took Obama 6 months to declare an emergency as a result of the swine flue virus but things turned even worse when the swine flue immunizations started killing people as well. Go figure.
