Somewhere in these DP pages I was struck by a discussion to the effect that the Tea Party went after their own party (Republicans), whereas Organizing for Action, like Occupy Wall Street before them, opposed conservatives and subsequently the Trump Presidency. The gist of the discussion was that somehow OFA was more righteous in their efforts. But look where the efforts of the left has gotten them. While the Tea Party was opposing Republicans that weren't acting like conservatives, the progressive left was supporting Obama's policies and the liberal elites that supported those policies. During the Democrat Primaries many of these same people supported Bernie Sanders. The progressive left didn't have much of a chance in this fight due either to the lack of numbers or the chicanery of the Clinton campaign. The left eventually had to sell out and nominated a flawed candidate in Hillary Clinton. They lost and now are left with opposing President Trump.
Meanwhile, the Tea Party and conservative right elected conservative politicians to the House and Senate, not to mention many governorships and state legislatures. Conservatives worked from within to fundamentally change the party. They rejected elite lifetime politicians and elected Donald Trump over fifteen other (mostly) politicians. Liberals settled for the elite status quo and failed.
I contend that the Tea Party was successful in changing the Republican Party, while the liberal/progressives and the ineffectual subgroups therein have been a failure. Why is this? I believe this is because the Tea Party and other conservative groups have actual principles that guide them. Conservatives stuck to those principles even when it looked like it might cost them an otherwise solid Republican office. Liberals make the safe choice and elect Democrats regardless of their principles. Is this because what they really want is the power, and to hell with any principles?
In the absence of any real unifying principles, liberals are left with one common agenda: Oppose President Donald Trump. It seems to me that the current agenda is to try and find fault with anything Trump does or says without any unifying principle. Much of this is disingenuous. Americans can see through the liberal agenda claiming Trump wants to stop all immigration, when it is even clear to them that he only opposes illegal immigration. Even liberals must know that he does not intend to ban all Muslims. Certainly liberals understand that President Trump has no intention of withdrawing from NATO or the UN. These false arguments will not go far. For one, I am happy if liberals stick with their agenda of nit picking President Trump. Liberals will fail while conservatives will continue to advance their agenda.
