Colonoscopy

wow... well, good luck and keep up with the checkups. I'm headed into my first colonoscopy in two more years.

good luck to you, as well. do you do the partially conscious version? when i had my most recent screen, i chose the all the way under option. it was a bit like time travel, and i found that disturbing. however, i didn't want to be awake through any of it.

I've not done one yet. I heard it wasn't painful just embarrassing because of the blasting the air up your rectum making you all farty.

I went for a consultation and the doctor comes in and says Happy Birthday! Turning 50 is wonderful.

In all seriousness its probably a good thing I had the procedure this morning. One polyp removed. Probably nothing but sure beats later stage colon cancer. I was apprehensive about the prep but it really wasn't that terrible. Sure you are in the bathroom a bit but it wasn't for long periods of time as I read. The worst was getting up at 2:30 to drink 32 ounces of apple juice and miralax. Yuk.

If you are 50 you really should consider it. Don't let the prep stories scare you or the perceived humiliation. An ounce of prevention and all that.

Anyone have an interesting story good or bad? I go back in 5 years. Its nice to have good medical insurance.

I had one 15 years ago...because my mother had colon cancer. The prep is the worst part. They give you a gallon jug with some powdered mix and tell you to drink it over a period of time.. By the time you show up for the procedure, you feel a bit weak and lethargic, but are sedated. Afterwards they encourage you to pass gas to clear the air out of your system. Came up clear. No polyps.

I was fully conscious....but sedated.

i don't remember that part. the rest of it was unpleasant, but not painful. don't worry about it too much.

My dad said basically they push air up inside your colon to stretch out the bends, nooks and crannies so that they can see the walls clearly. I should watch a video of one. Katie Couric did one live on TV to promote awareness after her husband died from colon cancer.

Given the very high risk of complications from a colonoscopy, you might want to look into the noninvasive cologuard test if you are of average risk for colon cancer.

my mom did it that way, too. i think that i prefer not being conscious during the procedure.

With the sedation....you simply do not care......much like the local anesthesia you may get for given surgical procedures. You know what's going on but don't work up the emotion to care or be frightened.

let's hope. however, at least we have the current option.

And it has save quite a few lives. My mother survived colon cancer as the colonoscopy allowed them to catch it and remove it before it spread. She eventually died 39 years later due to complications from COPD.

a colonoscopy caught precancerous polyps in my mom, as well, in the mid 1990s.

Wake up. All Done!

I hope I say this right; it's been a few years for my 2nd one, where I had an upper GI to go with the lower GI. Apparently I puked all over them.

The upper is something like a scraping in the esophagus and I take protonix for it. Years ago I used to get upper pains that were far worse than those I got from diverticulitis, which were bad.

The prep sucked for me; preparationH helps. Get it done. This damn thread reminds me that I'm due .

the UPPER GIs are far worse but the last one I had wasn't all that bad. The first one felt like I had someone roto-rooter out my throat with sand paper and you have all that air in your chest and that is a pain too

The prep is the worst part. That swill you have to drink tastes like lemon flavored salt water. It is disgusting.

The colonoscopy itself is nothing really as you are asleep. You do wake up feeling like you spent the night at Micheal Jackson's house but, the prep is much worse.

One is not asleep in Sweden but talking to the doc and nurses and looking at pretty pictures on the screen. A CT scan when they pump compressed air into you is much worse.

I have had two colonoscopy. Both times they put me under enough that I don't remember anything but waking up in recovery. Used the same stuff M. Jackson used to sleep.

In the US too much hot air up your ass can result in your becoming a yellowed haired President with tiny hands.

oh ****. i didn't go under. i hope that this doesn't kill me somehow. what if

then i woke up. they told me that i might feel a little drunk for a while. i told them that feeling drunk is more fun than this. they wheeled me out, my dad drove me back to my house, and then i slept for about four hours.

i saw a couple of these tests when i was searching for "the future of colonoscopy" earlier today. i work in biotech, so i find it pretty interesting.

I noticed that for people at high risk, the colonoscopy is still recommended.

at this point, that seems to be the case.
