Since we are getting into the meat of the 2019-2020 season, why not open up a thread to talk about the rankings (various ones) and start to consider who may be working their way towards the Playoff Selections and who may be on the outside looking in.

College Football Rankings Week 6 are all in, let us start with the AP Top 25 Poll.

1. Alabama (5-0)
2. Clemson (5-0)
3. Georgia (4-0)
4. Ohio State (5-0)
5. LSU (4-0)
6. Oklahoma (4-0)
7. Auburn (5-0)
8. Wisconsin (4-0)
9. Notre Dame (3-1)
10. Florida (5-0)
11. Texas (3-1)
12. Penn State (4-0)
13. Oregon (3-1)
14. Iowa (4-0)
15. Washington (4-1)
16. Boise State (4-0)
17. Utah (4-1)
18. UCF (4-1)
19. Michigan (3-1)
20. Arizona State (4-1)
21. Oklahoma State (4-1)
22. Wake Forest (5-0)
23. Virginia (4-1)
24. SMU (5-0)
25. Texas A&M (3-2) & Michigan State (4-1)

Others receiving votes: California 141, Memphis 71, Appalachian State 50, Army 44, Missouri 26, Baylor 19, Colorado 19, Minnesota 15, USC 7, Kansas State 1, Tulane 1

Dropped from rankings: California 15, USC 21, Kansas State 24

My comments:

No shock that Clemson slipped a position given their game against North Carolina (who is slightly better under Mack Brown but he needs more recruitment years to help,) and given how Alabama is playing it is no surprise they are solidly in the #1 position for this week. Alabama and Clemson are both off next week.

Georgia plays Tennessee next, which will be a cakewalk but odds are it will be Georgia that faces Alabama for the SEC title. Chances for Georgia?

Ohio State hosts #25 Michigan State, might be a good game but Ohio State should get by.

Oklahoma should pass by Kansas next week and end up 5-0, and that might mean a stronger showing to get into the top 5.

Game of the Week might be #7 Auburn at @10 Florida, in a way we get to find out who is the other SEC team with a good bowl bid.

I have zero faith in Texas to do well enough against Oklahoma (on 10/12) but they should finish strong enough for a reasonable bowl bid.

Thoughts on the others?

I know they have no shot, but Army is the team I follow. They were ranked 28th last week and slipped to 32nd even though they were off this week. IIRC they finished 25th last year.

I don't care as long as they BEAT NAVY!

My 2 long shot best for the championship

Bo Nix the #1 rated QB coming out of high school last year has not disappointed. If there is a live long shot it's Auburn.

When I was a kid decades ago Army was always in the top ten. Arnold Galiffa, Pete Vann, Dan Folberg, Bob Anderson,
Pete Dawkins I haven't forgotten. Trump was mentioning the possibility of Army & Navy players being allowed to go pro
right after graduation if that happened maybe we'll see Army or Navy in the top ten again.

I disagree; I remember when the US only sent “amateur” athletes to the Olympics. we were able to hold our own and then someone suggested that professional athletes should be allowed to attend, money is the root.....

Staubach was an example, David Robinson was allowed a shorter commitment. There are others that escape my addled brain right now.

David Robinson was deemed ''not physically qualified as an unrestricted line officer in the United States Navy.'' too tall to serve on ships
or airplanes! So he was required to serve only two years of active duty. That afforded him the possibility of becoming a first-round draft
choice in June for any team willing to wait two years.

Ever since Army's idolized Heisman winning Glenn Davis was denied permission to resign from the Army in 1947, all NFL prospects
had to serve their full term of service. That is why ever since big money from the NFL began to flow into top players hands around
1960 Army never was able to recruit top players and have never been in the top ten since.

Consider probably the greatest athlete in the 3 major sports was Arnold Galiffa of Army. Galiffa was the All-American QB in 1949 & came in 4th
in the Heisman Voting. He led Army to a record of 17-0-1 in his Junior and Senior years when Army was ranked 6th & 4th in the nation
respectively. He was captain of the Army Basketball team and as Armies star 1st baseman he was on the Cover of LIFE magazine May 1949
in his baseball garb, LIFE along with Look & Time was the top magazine of his era.
He was the only 11 letterman in the 3 major sports in the history of West Point.

After after being wooed by 26 other colleges including Notre Dame he made his trek to West Point. If a talent like Galiffa were to have
been a high school senior last year instead of 1945 there would be no chance at all that West Point could now land a player of that caliber.

That's why I if Trump mentioning the possibility of Army & Navy players being allowed to go pro
right after graduation actually happens maybe we'll see Army or Navy in the top ten again.

Your ranking under-rates Oklahoma. The previous years have been crippled by a rotten defense - no longer. While the defense is not top-ranking, its so much better than in previous years. That, plus an offense that is great and getting better every week I have little doubt this team will end up the best of the last three years. Had Mayfield or Murray had the defense I have seen this year, I have no doubt they would have been in the final two and probably won one or both.

Thanks for the post. I thought I was up on Army football. Davis, Blanchard and Dawkins get all the glory. I had never heard of Galiffa.

My great-grandfather and grandfather are both assigned Cullum numbers; my nephew as well. A few years ago, a buddy and I were taking a m/c trip north from VA to NH. We stopped at WP and paid respects to grandad at the Old Chapel Cemetery. Glenn Davis had passed away recently and we ran into the caretaker and he was in a talkative mood. The legendary Army coach, Red Blaik, died in 1989 and was laid to rest near the Old Chapel. Blaik’s headstone is really ornate for the setting. Anyway, Glenn Davis was laid to rest very near Blaik. Blanchard was still alive, the caretaker told us, and they were saving a spot for him so that Red could watch over his guys. I don’t know if Blanchard ever was buried at WP.

Edit: I see Blanchard is at Ft Sam Houston, died 2009.
