It’s now against the law in New York City to threaten someone with a call to immigration authorities or refer to them as an “illegal alien” when motivated by hate.


The restrictions — violations of which are punishable by fines of up to $250,000 per offense — are outlined in a 29-page directive released by City Hall’s Commission on Human Rights.

How can a law legally violate the first amendment?
 
I predict this law will be overturned under the "Are you freaking kidding us??!" clause of the Constitution.

You're not upset because this law violates the First Amendment. You're upset because it would remove a tiny fraction of Americans' power to hate. :)

Nothing like taking control of the language. Language is how our brains help us relate to the world around us. “If it’s not illegal, then it is legal, isn’t it?”

No wonder our young people are confused.

You have to understand, supporters of fascism do not rally behind free speech for the sake of free speech. They do so as a smokescreen for their entitled attitude. They feel entitled to hate speech without any consequences.

You admit in your post the law violates the First Amendment, yet you seem to approve of it. How about a State / City passing a law that says you can't burn the Flag even though the SC has ruled such laws are unconstitutional.

I hate to say it, but the NYC law is just stupid. Oh wait, I used the word hate. :mrgreen: Wonder if it is a violation to say "I hate illegal aliens"?

You're using a lot of emotion in your reply because you cannot handle in any way, shape or form the infringement on the privilege to hate other human beings. ;)

A video has gone viral showing a man in a Chicago park harassing a woman for wearing a shirt with the flag of Puerto Rico on it, and repeatedly asking her if she's a U.S. citizen. A nearby officer who failed to help her is on desk duty while the incident is investigated.

If the free speech warriors were consistent in their views, then you would see them take on free speech cases all across the political spectrum.

But you don't. When it comes to matters such as oppressing the right to nonviolently protest oil pipelines, they go silent. That's because they couldn't give a flying **** about free speech except where it gives them more power. :)

Not allowing the use of immigration status or calling such distinctions "hate speech" is moronic. That makes as little sense as banning the terms "criminal" and "fugitive" since they may be considered to have been used in a negative (hateful?) context.

If the script were flipped and it were hate speech against white males, you would lose your mind, so I don't know what you're on about this time. :shrug:
 
1. Like many other people, I support President Trump's efforts to enforce our immigration laws.

2. But that does NOT mean being unnecessarily rude to people who are here without permission. (Most of the media now simply used the word "migrant.")

3. I agree with other members that it will be very difficult for a jury to say that the defendant was motivated by "hate." Hopefully, the Supreme Court will invalidate this law.

4. This law is, however, only a harbinger of what will be happening in the coming decades as our national population profile continues its dizzying change. Someday when the liberals get control of the Supreme Court, free speech WILL be severely narrowed for the sake of national harmony.

Here we see the beginnings of the word salad from those who support free speech not as an end to itself, but as a cover for hate speech. It does not take long for their true motives to be revealed. All you have to do is ask them how we can legally stop hate speech, and they will bend over backwards to make sure that hate speech remains alive and well, as his next response to me will prove.
