China Responds Slowly, and a Pig Disease Becomes a Lethal Epidemic - The New York Times

The bungled effort to contain African swine fever could result in higher Chinese food costs for years and shows the limits of Beijing’s top-down approach to problems.

WULONGQIAO, China — A devastating disease spreading from China has wiped out roughly one-quarter of the world’s pigs, reshaping farming and hitting the diets and pocketbooks of consumers around the globe.

China’s unsuccessful efforts to stop the disease may have hastened the spread — creating problems that could bedevil Beijing and global agriculture for years to come.

Hopefully this may get rid of the worst of the Republican 'swine' as well.

Don't say evil things and wish death on fellow Americans, JacksinPA. Even if you mean it. Keep the darkness in your soul and maybe it will dissipate.

There is a reason China is buying up America's pork producers.

I didn't see it that way.

If you didn't, it's because you didn't want to. He unambiguously wished death on (at least some) Republicans.

How so? The OP doesn't mention what happens if you eat diseased pig or how it will affect people.

We're going to poison ourselves with our own home-grown pork.

USDA rules on pork inspection to change for the first time in 50 years.

ALBERT LEA, Minnesota — America's food inspectors are warning that "unsafe" pork is likely making it to consumers under a change in rules for meat inspection.

That change is now set to roll out nationwide to plants that process more than 90 percent of the pork Americans eat.

"The consumer's being duped," Food Safety and Inspection Service inspector Jill Mauer told NBC News. "They believe that it actually is getting federally inspected when there's no one there to even watch or do anything about anything."

"It's so hard to go to work without feeling physically sick watching this just happen, unfolding in front of you," inspector Anthony Vallone said. "Especially since you took the oath to protect the American people."

So in your willful blindness, you totally missed this part of the OP:

Hopefully this may get rid of the worst of the Republican 'swine' as well.

That's assuming you actually missed it and aren't just pretending it's not there, fully knowing it is.

Um I can read. You interpret that as wishing death on someone. I interpret that as wishing that it's the final nail to impeach him because of the trade failure.

No, that's unambiguously wishing death. It's confirmed -- you don't see it because you don't want to.

You and I have no idea what went through the OP's mind. Let's ask him what he meant by it, shall we?

As I said, the statement is unambiguous. It's also unambiguous that you do not wish to see it.

Why do you keep saying that I don't want to see it? I can see what you mean. Your point has been made.

Because you're refusing to accept that it says the thing it plainly says.

Chinese pig farmers have done all year what they've done for thousands of years in an epidemic that wipes out livestock.

The farmers throw the animal carcases into the river, river upon river throughout China. This creates of course "carcase jam" in the rivers everywhere downstream and into the bays.

Yet CCP officials in Beijing and in the provincial capitals remain wholly unprepared to deal with the epidemic either on the ground or in the rivers much less as the carcases spread out in the bays and into one another. Nor is there any research on the effects to humans of fish feeding on the pig carcases.

I'm in China presently where the price of pork is astronomical. So when I bought some pork at an indoor market the other day the Chinese gal standing next to me said in English, "You must be loaded to afford to buy pork at these prices." I simply said to her the exchange rate last week at Bank of China was RMB 7 : USD 1. In other words when I give Bank of China USD $100 they give me RMB 700. Giving 'em a thousand bucks is even better ha.

In USD $100 forex alone I get in a day what it takes half of the Chinese population one week to earn (RMB 700). So that's how the other half in China lives, on less than $4000 RMB a month which is poor enough to legally exempt 'em from taxes.

The bottom line being CCP Boyz in Beijing haven't any capacity or capability to deal with the African Swine Epidemic that has been hammering Chinese agriculture for more than a year now. Yet CCP Boyz know well that pork is the main meat staple in China and that its availability and price impact both social and economic stability in ways that are far ranging, immediate, direct, serious.

This has been going on for a long time. The rural Chinese live closely with their livestock and poultry, and that is also why human infection is always a few mutations away.

If China could grow it’s own pork, it would. Our farmers are supplying an “as needed” market. Beneath all the bravado and glitter is a festering cesspool.

In the time it took me to write this, the DP children started throwing their crayons at each other.

Chinese are brilliant at making themselves appear to be masters of the universe. Many saps in the West and in the USA in particular fall for it, both easily and immediately.

Countries of the region that border China however know the thousands year game of China and, in the modern world of democracy and prosperity, they reject it. These countries want, welcome and need the support of the USA.

The Google says its in nearby Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Austin,_Minnesota, land of floods, tornadoes & labor unrest. The town is sometimes called "SPAM Town USA".[9] Austin is home to Hormel's corporate headquarters, a factory that makes most of North America's SPAM tinned meat, and the Spam Museum. Austin is also home to the Hormel Institute, a leading cancer research institution operated by the University of Minnesota with significant support from the Mayo Clinic.[10]

In 2015 Austin was named one of the "Top 10 Affordable Small Towns Where You'd Actually Want to Live" and one of the "Best Small Cities in America".

As a side note, the largest producer of insulin is Eli Lilly, located in Indianoplace, IN. Their primary source of this essential hormone for diabetics was extraction from the panceas of pigs, which created a logistics nightmare on both ends of the extraction process. Lilly was one of the first manufacturers of insulin to adopt recombinant DNA bacteria via fermentation.
