Californians Thrown Curve Ball on Eve of New Ammo Control :: Guns.com

With just over a week to go before a looming ammunition control law takes effect, California officials are backing a new requirement that could leave many unable to buy ammo.

Prop. 63, approved by voters in 2016 after an effort by now-Gov. Gavin Newsom, requires a background check be conducted on all sales of ammunition in the state. Set to go live on July 1, the California Department of Justice just over a week ago filed emergency regulations to require a federally compliant California driver license or ID card to legally buy ammo. The problem is, many in the state don’t currently have one of these “REAL ID” cards yet.

This is why nobody trusts "reasonable" gun control measures. The "emergency" regulations are onerous and difficult to comply with before the new law kicks in.

Basically, if you don't have a "real ID" you have to provide a copy of your birth certificate or passport with your regular license. If your name has changed since you were born or got your passport (like, for example, if you got married or divorced) you need to bring even more documentation.

Please keep in mind, this is for the purchase of AMMUNITION. It's not even to buy a "homicidal maniac, fully automatic, more lethal than you could ever imagine, killing machine".

I suspect that many Californians will be making runs to Las Vegas, Lake Havasu and Yuma.

Too bad, you will need a real id driver license to fly (or a passport) soon. Not hard to get, I got mine, easy squeezy.

I have weaponized toilet and kitchen sink. They are ammunition. Do I have to get a background check now?

We get Californians buying ammo by the dollies here in Reno, NV during Gun Shows.

This is why 'gun' nuts can't be trusted to present a fair account of the event...

The Real ID Act has been around since 2005. It has 4 phases that were are well known. California has complied with the real ID act. By now most Californians should have a 'real Id'...

You will need the real ID for many other events, from boarding a plane to access to some government buildings.

Tuck the whine back in and get what Congress voted for over a decade ago, right after 9/11.... :peace

This state is so ridiculously intrusive. Gestapo!

You shouldn't need an ID, real or otherwise, to buy ammo.
This is intrusive and IMO, this will be eventually shot down by the courts.

You need a state/govt issued ID to buy cigarettes, certain drugs, and alcohol, the firearm that will use the ammo, operate a motor vehicle on public roads, board a flight- I see ammo the same way.

It won't be shot down.... :peace

Please tell me you are not a freedom loving liberal.
I get asking for ID(s) to check that minors are not buying items that are health-harming but ammo? If the new guideline states we are doing this to prevent minors from buying ammo, I'd get it, but they are asking everyone of age for an ID. Why do they need to know the identity of an adult?

To bad we don't need ID to vote.

LOL

Why don't you explain why the need for Real ID became necessary?

But to exercise political power, you don't need no stinking photo Id right?

That will turn out to be one of the most embarrassing and shamefully ignorant posts of this summer. "Notquiteright" is an understatement.

First, "Californians can (or could) apply for a new compliant ID at the DMV starting January 22, 2018." regardless of when the Real ID Act was passed.

Second, by now the majority of Californians don't comply with the real ID act. In general most licenses are routinely renewed, and many routinely given, to drivers who aren't aware, or don't fly, or don't want the hassle of more paperwork. My license, issued in 2017 for example, is not real ID certified and will renew in 2021. It does not have the REAL ID official icon stamp because even if I wanted it, it was not available to anyone.

Third, people are whining not because the REAL ID act was passed in 2005, but because the government gave all of ONE WEEKS NOTICE before making 80 percent of otherwise qualified citizens ineligible to buy ammo.

Your ignorance of the Real ID implementation in California is acceptable, your Cliff Clavin certitude and idiotic lecturing on who is trustworthy is not. With that, I'll leave you with a reminder to think before you insult others:

You don't need to acquire a Real ID within the next week to buy "cigarettes, certain drugs, and alcohol". THAT is the issue, not the requirement to show a photo ID. And its just one more impediment that was tossed in at the last moment to obstruct lawful gun use. It has ZERO to do with crime control.

The requirement of the Real ID thing is bs, because Real ID is bs. That said, I don't find the rest of it to be terribly awful.

But, I just want to reiterate - **** Real ID.

lol yeah, it's almost like the most important right you have as a citizen should probably not be subject to racial bias.

But... but... but...

They don't need that to vote...

But, it's ok if black folks can't excercise their 2nd Amendment rights?

In this country validating of a purchase of beer is far more important than validating the casting of a vote. One is a sacred and protected American right given to us by our forefathers, the other is a way to get a free cell phone.

I do not support having to undergo a background check to buy ammunition, but I do support having a real ID generally. Everyone should have a real ID regardless.

flying isn't a constitutional right. And I love how you really don't care if this harasses honest gun owners-I suspect you relish the thought

flying isn't a constitutional right.
He didn't claim or imply it was. He was just illustrating how Real ID is becoming required for more and more things.
